Ex Deoxys Sableye Reverse

Hey Y’all,

I’m very much out of the loop in terms of the current Pokemon market. Only by accident I stumbled upon the quite insane sold prices for the ex Deoxys Sableye Reverse Holo. It is one of my all time favorite cards and truthfully I can somewhat understand why it’s expieriencing a hype, I’m just astounded how sudden this seem to have happened.

Is this sustainable? Or do you guys reckon it’s a good time to sell them now, especially the SGC 9.5? (Not that I need the money, but I’m very curious how high it could go).

I’m curious to hear what your crystal balls come up with!

Cheers, muk

Hard to say really. EX era reverses could be stupid for a while longer.

As far as reverses go it doesn’t get much better than that Sableye. The right set, the right foil, the right rarity, the meme factor (which does seem to be an actual thing,) that card in particular has always seemed to gel with people even though Sableye isn’t exactly a $tonker. When a card transcends the pokemon on it I’d generally take that as a sign of $trength (though there are exceptions :frog:.) I don’t think it’ll be the first EX reverse to drop, and if they have any juice left then that one is probably one of them.

I overall agree with c0ll3ctor, with just some slight differences. I think Sableye and other reverses look cool (I collect these, don’t get me wrong), but in the grand scheme of things I believe they’re pretty unremarkable cards.

My best guess is that there will be a solid retrace as soon as the sentiment shifts, considering Sableye has no business staying in the same league as way popular Pokemon like Rayquaza, Lugia, starters, Ex cards, and so on. Right now the demand is crazy, since it’s fueled by low pop chasers, tiktok memes, speculation about 30th anniversary and the fact you have a very likely successful attempt when flipping.

Once people get bored, this kind of cards will be the firsts they’re going to dump (vintage speaking). Imho.

Hope you are doing well @muk

I’d personally sell it in a heartbeat but I’m not into EX reverses or Sableye, so I’m biased.

I don’t think the current prices are sustainable, same as a bunch of other cards right now. However the 2025 market is kinda wild and unlike anything we’ve seen before, so it’s hard to say.

Since its a special card to you I would ask yourself the questions:

  • If you sold them, what would you use the money for and would it make you happy?
  • If the price went up after you sold them and you couldn’t get another, how would you feel?
  • If it did skyrocket again later, would you have sold anyway, or would you ask the same question?

After thinking about these questions i hope they help with your decision!

Thank you all so much for your well balanced inputs

Say my curiosity got the better of me and I did want to put the SGC 9.5 up for auction, could any European member here recommend an auctioneer like Z&G or smpratte, but within the EU? I never commissioned a card for auction before, but I assume it would be preferable to have maximum reach when the grading company is rather obscure and nobody really searches for it specifically?

I think SLAP could be a good fit. They’re based in Germany

I can vouch for SLAP, got my money 3 weeks after the auction ended. No issues whatsoever. Even low grade, low demand cards are watchlisted ~40 times and get lots of bids. They take a 10% cut + fees, I got like 88% of the money the cards sold for.

They are ridiculously priced but we all have collectively decided to grant legendary collection (reprint of a reprint) top tier status simply because they introduced a new reverse pattern.

So why shouldn’t ex sets all be like that?

In my opinion:
-sheer numbers; LC are 110 cards with the most famous Poke artworks out there, vs 1500 potential ex era reverses
-Wotc is king for plenty of people
-They were the main gimmick of the set, while ex-era ones just a byproduct niche until now. Also ex sets have ultra rares and GSs
-LC are “true” reverses in a certain sense; all sparkly, extremely bombastic and they totally change cards appearance. Ex-era reverses are maybe considered merely a spiced up version of the artwork.

There’s an Australian guy who’s favourite card is this. He buys all the 10s he can find and is quite well off.
