Evaluating

Hey,

I was surfing through eBay fpr promoas and then I found one which someone listed for 2k$, so I went back through the sold-listing section and couldnt find much to help me evaluate it

I know it is not easy giving a price on an item yet I really cant find another one or previous ones to compare to; actually the pop is really low as 11 only

Yet, the question is still there, is it worth that much? Or even how much if not?

With all respect to the seller, I want to know from your experience and understand how to evaluate an item with low pop/sale history/if none even.

It’s like a 10 dollar card. I cant see it rising to 2,000 usd for grading at psa 10

last 10 sold for 150

All the pop added together, PSA 10s are 23% for this card.

Pop doesn’t mean anything except how many people graded it. In regards to pricing, people pay what they value the cards. I don’t personally value this item $2000 but someone else might. That’s the beauty of pokemon TCG.

nah.

It doesnt matter if it has a low percentage of grading at 10 if there is a never ending supply of them. It’s not a rare very sought after card.

As for the value is concerned, it’s based on market sale price, which is sub $200 for a psa10. If some random guy wants to dump $2000 on this card, for whatever reason, be it money laundering, unlimited wealth, there is only one listed on ebay at the time - that doesn’t suddenly mean this is a $2000 dollar card. There would need to be demand and a limit on supply to sustain that pricepoint for the value to be $2000.

PS. I’m not trying to take a dump on this card. It’s a cool card. It’s just not a card worth thousands of dollars is all I’m saying.

Thank you so much for your opinions

I would say definitely not 2k$, but the last sold prices which happened ~2 years ago doesn’t mean anything anymore either

So how would you evaluate such a card? Put it in an auction for example?

Compare to other cards of similar era/rarity/pokemon popularity/grade/grading difficult. It’s more of an art than a science. Over time you gain an understanding of what “feels” right.

It should also be considered that it may very well sell at a price that seems unreasonable if someone really wants it and they have the money and there is currently no cheaper option. It doesn’t necessarily make the card worth $2k though even if it sells at that price.

Understood, thank you

On the contrary, I was actually pointing out 1 in 4 graded a 10 (which is quite a lot) and pop reports don’t always reflect value. I just find it hard to value since last known ebay sold listing was in 2018 for $150. I also pointed out that low pop doesn’t mean scarcity. I could grade a Hidden Fates common card and it’ll be a pop 1.

I think I didn’t convey my message across very well (I wrote that at 4am).

Ah ok. Well I think a lot of people need to just brush up on scarcity vs rarity when it comes to pokemon cards, especially when they use PSA pop reports as their primary factor of deterimining value. Here is a brief 3 minute video highlighting the difference. There are plenty of cards that have low pop reports (at the time) which makes them scare, but not necessarily rare. I thought @smpratte did a video on that once but I couldn’t find it.

I just can’t find that many ungraded cards of this promo.

Also, having it as a Promo card is what probably adds to its elusive evaluation.
