Epson V600 vs V550

Just wondering, how is the scan quality of a 600 vs a 550? Looking to buy a scanner so would appreciate some advice.

I thought that they were virtually the same as far as scan quality/color/output. Just that the 600 has fully integrated digital ICE to automatically remove dust and stuff. If you found a good deal on a V550 over a 600 I’d definitely take it

I went with the v550 and have been impressed with its quality. You’ll find that the specs of the scanners are very close. The reasons I went with the v550 over the v600:

  1. Found an awesome deal on a barely/never used v550 on eBay before a good-deal v600 popped up. Scanners are one of those items that people think they want, they buy new, and then use once and never again, so if you’re patient you can find them for good prices on eBay.

  2. I first thought the ICE/automatic dust removal feature would be worth the extra price, but looking into it a bit I found there was a slight quality trade off when that feature is enabled. For most people the quality difference is probably not noticeable and the convenience of the dust removal probably makes sense, but ultimately it didn’t make sense to me to pay more for something that’s going to result in possibly a lower-quality scan.

At the end of the day, not a big difference, and if it’s your first scanner or an upgrade, you’ll be happy with either one for sure.

Was curious about this as well so thanks for the information hypernova! Question though, does the V600 really use a fluorescent lamp? The Epson website says it uses ReadyScan LED Technology, whatever that means.

It does appear that the v600 uses an LED lamp. And looking into it a bit, I’m not sure the v600 ever used a fluorescent tube. I was mistaken about that, so I removed it from the post. Thanks for catching it!
