Memes, art. What’s the difference?

Calculating your PWCC pay-outs for taxes, looking at your bank balance, wondering where all the money went, and realizing that just like every other year of your life you once again spent all your money on Pokémon cards.

Hi! PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY AND IN ITS ENTIRETY! First things first! THE PRICE IS FIRM. I NEVER lower the price on ANY of my Buy It Now listings. Have not done it in 20 years on Ebay and I don’t plan on EVER doing it. This listing ends no later than 11:59 EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME THURSDAY May 6. As of Tuesday, May 4, that is TWO DAYS from now. Read the P.S. at the bottom and you will see why this ends May 6 if it is not sold by then. All my prices are fair because THIS IS NOT MY HOBBY. THIS IS HOW I TRY TO MAKE A LIVING. Thank you for understanding. Now that that is out of the way
I do NOT want you to consider buying this until you have read the whole description. I do not want you to consider buying this unless you have more money to spend than the amount I am selling this box for. I don’t want you to buy this if you spend more than three seconds thinking about putting this on your Ebay watch list. The first 24 hours this was listed, 12 people put it on their watch list. That means those 12 Ebayers are not interested. Now, several days later, there are 26 Ebayers asking for a lower price. That means they are not interested, either. I don’t want you to consider buying this if you even think about asking me for a lower price. I have been selling (and buying) on Ebay since July 2000. I have NEVER sold ANYTHING on Ebay to someone who asked for a lower price on an item. Never. Those who want something buy it. Those who don’t want something, well, they put it on their watch list. I try to place a fair price on everything I sell because, again, THIS IS NOT MY HOBBY. THIS IS HOW I TRY TO MAKE A LIVING. It might seem flattering to me to have a lot of people watching this, but it is, frankly, boring. It does nothing for me or for the person putting it on their watch list. (I try to tell people the truth, whether they like it or not. I could never be a diplomat! ) I have been selling Pokemon since January 1999. At that time, I made a bet with myself. The bet I made was this: POKEMON IS SOMETHING SPECIAL. It is popular with children ages three and older. I knew this because I sold Pokemon plush at the mall in 1999, where I had a cart that carried two items: Beanie Babies and Pokemon. It was also popular with kids age 6 to 14 because I sold both Pokemon packs and singles at the cart. They loved the cards. At one point in the fall of 1999, I was selling more Pokemon than Beanie Babies–and I was selling a lot of Beanies! Then, “disaster” stuck. Well, not disaster, exactly. After Hasbro bought Wizards of the Coast in later summer of 1999, the company went back and printed more of the English Base packs. How many additional packs did they print? My guess is 10 to 15 million more packs but it could be more. There was one day that turned out to be an epiphany for me and Pokemon. A separated woman friend who had two young kids–I admit I had a hard crush on her (My wife knew that because I told her and even if I didn’t tell her, my wife would know anyway!)–says to me in mid-November of 1999, “Jerry, is Pokemon over?” I looked at her and said, “It sure looks that way.” The demand for Base English packs had dried up. Completely. Because the market was flooded. Or so it seemed. As I was driving home from the mall that night, I said to myself, Maybe it’s not over. It’s too popular to be over. It may take awhile–years maybe–but it will come back. After all, I said to myself, there are three million kids born every year in the United States. Now, you have to understand, I wasn’t absolutely certain that Pokemon would come back, but I was pretty sure. So, I made my bet. I decided to buy more Pokemon when no one was buying. Then I bought more. And more. I even bought some 1st edition French boxes. And some 1st edition German boxes. And some Japanese boxes. And English Base boxes. And lots of single packs. Lots. Finally, I stopped buying when I ran out of money. You know, financial advisers always tell people to diversify. They say, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. WRONG. WRONG. WRONG. My feeling since 1985 is to find a great basket yourself and put all your eggs in it! (because in the immortal words of the late screenwriter and novelist William Goldman, “Nobody knows nothing.”) Then borrow eggs from friends or family and put more eggs in the same, great basket! You know, they teach in business schools all over the world to “buy low and sell high.” After living on earth more years that I care to admit, I know that is 100% WRONG NEARLY 100% OF THE TIME. They should teach, instead, BUY HIGH, SELL HIGHER. I have known this for more than 35 years. I admit I have not always acted on this truism, but I do know this: whenever you think the price is high, it’s actually low. And when you think the price is low, it’s actually high. WHENEVER I HAVE BOUGHT A SO-CALLED BARGAIN–and I admit I have done it several times–I HAVE ALWAYS REGRETTED IT. ALWAYS! On Wall Street for more than 150 years, they have advised clients who buy a stock on the way DOWN, “Don’t catch a falling knife.” True. I can give you 500 or more examples to substantiate what I am saying, but it would probably bore me as much as it would bore you. (Most of you have probably already stopped reading already!) I will give you one example. A dealer I know told me three months ago that someone he knew had purchased in December 2020 five boxes of 1986-87 Fleer Basketball for $45,000 per box (Michael Jordan’s rookie card). I told the dealer, “He got a great deal.” And he did! I truly believe those boxes are still CHEAP at the current price of around $70,000 per box, which is the going price NOW–JUST FIVE MONTHS LATER. I firmly believe those five boxes will hit AT LEAST $250,000 EACH before this decade is over. You think I am crazy? I am not. It is the same reason a painting that sells at the “insane” price of $3.3 million seven years ago fetches $27 million six years later. And so on. Do I think the price of this 1st edition Base French sealed box of 36 packs will hit $250,000 a box by 2029? Maybe. Maybe not, but I would not bet against it. Rare becomes rarer over time AND MORE EXPENSIVE. I am convinced that the DEMAND for Pokemon is JUST BEGINNING. If I am wrong, the person who buys this may even lose a few bucks. (I seriously doubt that.) If I am wrong, my children will lose more than a few bucks BECAUSE AS SOME OF YOU MAY KNOW IF YOU FOLLOW MY LISTINGS, I AM LEAVING AT LEAST 90% OF ALL MY POKEMON TO MY FOUR CHILDREN. In fact, this is the only sealed box of Pokemon I plan to sell in my lifetime. I am content to just pack my packs out, pack by pack, week after week. Boring, huh? I am selling this box for one reason: to help my youngest daughter and her husband and their three children buy a house this year. Do you know what housing prices are in the Northeast these days? But In the future, today’s insane house prices are going to seem LOW. So, here is the bottom line: The price of this factory sealed, super rare 1st edition Base French booster box is $53,240. Not a penny more, not a penny less. Now how did I arrive at this weird number? Well, it’s really simple. A dealer who is less than two hours drive from me offered me $48,000 for this box. He’s a nice guy, but that is not the point. The point is that if I sell it to him, he will simply raise the price because he has to make a living, too. I would rather sell it to someone who might keep it sealed and save it for someone special in their family. Ebay charges sellers around 13% in fees, so if you add 13% to $48,000, you get $53,240. A final point before we get to the rules: The amount of 1st edition French sealed booster packs that is out there is probably less than one tenth of one percent–that’s right LESS THAN ONE TENTH OF ONE PER CENT–of what is out there in English Base booster packs. (I happen to think it is less than one fortieth of one percent!) Just leave aside the ALMOST NONEXISTENT number of 1st edition Base French sealed boxes for a minute. The number of individual 1st edition French packs out there is a joke. Check Ebay and see what I mean. Then type on Ebay (or anywhere else, for that matter) English 1st edition Pokemon base packs. There are still quite a few. If you purchase this, you are buying something extremely rare of a product that will be popular for decades! (Also, I happen to know there are some wealthy people in France, too!) No more words from me. I don’t get paid by the word, but it would be nice, wouldn’t it? The rules: 1) The price is the price. You either want it or you don’t. If you want it, the price is $53,240. If you don’t want it, you would be overpaying by $53,240. 2) Please add $384 for insured shipping with signature required. 3) The box itself is as pristine as pristine can be–no dents, bumps, bruises and still sealed like it came from the factory. See photos–and don’t criticize my photography. I’m very sensitive. 4) Payment is due within three days of purchase. 5) If you have a question, please ask. 6) I am proud of my perfect feedback on Ebay, encompassing more than 6,300 separate transactions over the past 20 years. Thanks for reading this far. You have now read more in the last four minutes than Agent Orange has in his adult life. Not kidding! 7) If your feedback is under 10, you need to convince me you have the money to pay for this. 8) The most important rule of all–DO NOT FORGET RULE NUMBER ONE! Mask up. Jerry P.S. IF THIS DOES NOT SELL ON EBAY BY 11:59pm eastern daylight time MAY 6, I WILL SIMPLY SELL IT TO THE DEALER. P.P.S. Double boxed, fully insured and packed with care.

These new stamp cards are insane and I love that they’re based on old Japanese historic art. For clarity, the Pikachu card is based off a painting called “Beauty Looking Back”
