eBay announced in its 2021 Quarter 1 earnings release that trading card sales on eBay had a gross market value (GMV) of over $1 Billion. Again, $1 billion in trading card sales, in one quarter, just on eBay.
This type of volume is incredible and I think will only benefit people who sell cards on eBay. Hopefully eBay will continue to offer support for trading cards like they have done with eBay standard envelope and their new listing tool.
To give this number some more context, total GMV of goods sold on eBay (worldwide) in Q1 was $27.5 billion. Of that, $10 billion worth of goods was sold in the U.S. and $17.5 billion worth of goods was sold outside the U.S. That means that trading cards (again, trading cards) made up 10% of total dollar value of goods sold on eBay in the U.S. and at least 4% of total dollar value of goods sold on eBay world wide. It is absolutely incredible to think that 10% of GMV for ALL SALES in the U.S. were from trading cards in Q1.
Isn’t the $1 Billion dollar number just the US GMV? With total GMV for the quarter in the US at $10 Billion, that makes it roughly 10% of all eBay sales! (unless I’ve read that wrong…) Crazy numbers. Would be nice to know the International numbers for trading cards too!
You are correct. I must have skimmed over that small bit in my original post. I will edit it to reflect this. And yes, nearly 10% of all U.S. sales being trading cards is mind boggling!
