E4 Pokemon VGC Tournament - Generation 3

A quick reminder to the group here that myself and cosrob have our match scheduled in about two hours from the time of posting.

If anyone wants to watch me get absolutely wrecked in a top 8 finisher, this would be a good time to view!

Are you guys going to post the room links here when starting or is it being streamed on the Discord?

Wouldn’t miss this match for the world.

No plan to stream, but I guess it would not hurt to post room link. I figured folks could just jump onto showdown and see when the match populates with “silversnorlax204” and hop in then.

Sounds good. Post the room links here whenever you guys are ready and myself and any others will spectate.

Good luck!

I’ll post as well, 2-1 nail biter in each game, but I somehow eked out a win against cosrob.

First game was a pretty quick defeat on my end, decent bit of bad luck, but that’s how it goes.

Game two I was able to set up what I liked and was able to make some KO’s

Game three I was outplayed at the end, but got a lucky miss in my favor sealing the game for me.

Team report to follow!

That jolteon-metagross combo was pretty cool and who can forget naked aussie… lol

Very fun to watch live! nails were bitten indeed

One of the most insane sets I’ve had the pleasure of spectating live. Incredible plays and adaptations from two very evenly matched players.

Congrats @silversnorlax204 on making the Top 3 podium! You now get to fight me as your reward! This will be interesting…

@cosrob and @caughtatpoint will duke it out yet again in a runback. These two are developing quite the rivalry across our tournaments!

Thanks! I had been working on a decent little combo for a hot min so I’m happy that worked in my favor.

Naked aussie (is not a knock to cosrob at all, it’s actually an inside joke with a friend) But if encountered a T-tar in the outback I would be like: “seems legit”

Alright boys, girls, and genderless pokemon. Grab your popcorn as we review my team report and absolute bonkers break down of a team that should not have been this good. The team is called: WHITE KNIGHT. It’s actually an inside joke with a friend for the team nicknames so don’t worry about the naming conventions too much.

So, lets break it down!

Silversnorlax204 (Snorlax) @ Choice Band
Ability: Immunity
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 140 Def / 116 SpD
Careful Nature

  • Shadow Ball
  • Double-Edge
  • Earthquake
  • Self-Destruct

The lead slot I always put something unconventional to throw folks off, for the longest time this was another pokemon, but it just was not getting me the traction I needed so I switched to a pokemon I wanted to run this whole tournament and was not sure if I would be able to at any other point. Snorlax! While typically a great specially defensive wall, I opted to try a move set more common in ubers than OU: Choice Band! Double edge does just a crushing amount of damage to pokemon and gets me a good bit of early game momentum. On ladder it was not odd for me to use selfdestruct turn one to get rid of Skarm/Suicune switch ins. Overall I like Snorlax here, he’s just a bit harder to predict in the lead slot what the switch will be, or if I’ll hit something right in front of me.

The Great Wall (Skarmory) @ Leftovers
Ability: Keen Eye
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe
Careful Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

  • Spikes
  • Whirlwind
  • Protect
  • Toxic

Pretty standard bread and butter Skarm. I found the team really liked having both a ground immunity and a decent defensive check while I tried to position things around. This skarm is pretty solid but not without its faults. Focus punch users love this thing, and the occasional taunt user also shuts it down. Overall though, it does it’s job well and typically gives me a layer of spikes.

Meipu (Jolteon) @ Leftovers
Ability: Volt Absorb
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

  • Thunderbolt
  • Agility
  • Baton Pass
  • Substitute

This. This creature. Is amazing. Something I noticed with this team is that t-bolt was pretty strong against it, and used frequently on ladder. By keeping Jolteon in the back I was able to pick up good positioning possibilities to give to my sweepers. Set up either an agility or a sub based on what I saw in front of me and play accordingly. The hope is to agility turn one, lure in blissy or another t wave user and utilize sub turn two, to finish the combo turn 3 with a baton pass I used a combination of 3 physical attacking sweepers. Each one of which did not mind skarm too much so I didn’t change to a special sweeper… you’ll notice on paper though… Charizard LOOKS like my special sweeper, but he’s a little surprise as well.

Coco (Metagross) @ Lum Berry
Ability: Clear Body
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 128 HP / 252 Atk / 128 Spe
Adamant Nature

  • Meteor Mash
  • Explosion
  • Earthquake
  • Rock Slide

Metagross used to be a CB user on this team but I found he was typically fodder for t-wave or wisp so switched to lum and never looked back. Worked out really well on ladder as it just tore into things once a lane opened up. It for sure missed CB, but really need to switch moves for new threats that switched in. The speed EV’s allow for a faster metagross most of the time and after an agility pass out runs the entire meta. The remaining HP EV’s give meta just enough bulk to survive a lot of super effective EQ’s.

Princess Elsa (Charizard) @ Lum Berry
Ability: Blaze
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 112 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 140 Spe
Lonely Nature

  • Belly Drum
  • Double-Edge
  • Earthquake
  • Hidden Power [Rock]

Ah yes, belly drum zard. This thing is designed to be deceptive. Bring it in after an agility boost on something like skarm, salamence, or other things that don’t do well against fire/ice/grass moves and force a switch. Belly drum the switch and then start firing off boosted attacks. +6 allows me to OHKO a number of pokemon that are defensively invested. I choose HP Rock over rock slide as zard needs to hit consistently to sweep effectively. The extra power of rock slide is not super necessary most of the time. Double edge plays well in the neutral game, as does EQ actually.

Naked Aussie (Tyranitar) @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 176 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD / 72 Spe
Adamant Nature

  • Rock Slide
  • Earthquake
  • Flamethrower
  • Focus Punch

Ah, this monstrosity from the outback. I found I needed something to scare away the occasional skarm/steel type so I ran flamethrower for consistent accuracy over power. As i’m running a - sp atk version, no reason to try to hit for damage, just hit. Forcing the switch often meant I could use focus punch effectively. Or, if I got stuck against blissy I would just wait for it to soft boil up and drop a focus punch to KO. This particular mon rather liked having an agility boost and with the EV’s invested I could speed tie positive base 110’s. Another thing this particular t tar did well was survive hits. HP investment really made it stand out in a number of games I played.

That’s the team! I would say this is what makes Pokemon very interesting, individually a lot of these move sets, spreads and items don’t actually work well in a vacuum. But with help from team mates, they can really shine. Remember guys, it’s not about which pokemon is the strongest, its about the team dynamic! And this group supports each other oddly well. I was able to get up to 1450 on ladder with this thing and I still don’t quite know how, but it works!

Wow, great games! Knew it would be a close set.

@wisewailmer was a pleasure to have you compete. Definitely a very respectable placing that I’m sure your Hoenn Hoes would be proud of! Hope to see you next time!

@mossdeep congrats on the victory. You got the runback match against @dylan now.

GG and congrats on your win!

Thank you, I’d be remiss if I didn’t give @Will a mention for sending me a video of someone who talking about Linoone; I took the concept but didn’t want to rely on just Linoone, so padded out the rest of the team with old reliables

Two great matches, long ones too. Well played to both cosrob and caughtatpoint!! And congrats to caught and linoone!

Who opened the time machine back to Gen 2 stall? I thought the belly drum shenanigans died out then…

Jokes aside, great games with lots of high level plays and strategies. Congrats on winning the runback and punching your ticket into Top 4!

@cosrob always a pleasure to have you compete. Very strong showing and I know I’ll see you back for Gen 4 in a couple months!
