Congratulations to all of the winners! Was really happy to see all of the artworks and really deserved winners. This truly is one of the best highlights of every year being on E4. It is challenging yet very inspiring to do a little bit better every year to make your art stand out. Big thanks to everyone who participated. Love all you guys.
Special thank you to @koala for the Gallery layout. It gives such a nice personal touch to all the artworks. Huge thanks to @brendantheclayboy and @azulryu for taking up the organization responsibilities like every year. Truly appreciate all the work gone behind the scenes.
See you again next year for 2025 edition!
Cheers!
Great job everyone! Congratulations to the winners! I am happy that some of my favorites made the podium. A big thank you to @brendantheclayboy and @azulryu for hosting this event. It is one of my favorite community activities.
I tried to comment on art as they posted and hope to have time later to add some other comments. So many great entries. A big congratulations to @bbobrob on your finish in Original ! I really appreciate the details and creativity in your art. I just loved the playfulness of this piece. It so captured the essence of the Pokemon depicted.
A little about my submissions.
I chose my recreation Darkrai a fine 4’11" Pokemon to honor it after a dishonorable mention in the “favorite” polls.
The Thinker was inspired by real life. I frequently hike this small mountain near my home. In the spring the early buds on the trees give the surrounding landscape these great colors. The trail is used by many and is marked by these stacks of rocks on the granite face of the mountain. I often sit there with my pup just taking it in and thinking. I imagined Geodude finding this place of solitude. What does a rock Pokemon ponder? Cutifly of course is a bit of a distraction or is it the “light bulb” of a good idea. I added the forget me nots for fun.
there were a lot of really good ones on many levels. I was particularly impressed with @Versy 's dnite
Whoa is that Stone Mountain? Cool to see your piece was inspired by irl locations!
Can’t believe I placed this year! I was so excited to wake up and see today that I had made 3rd in the Recreation category. Thanks to all that voted and showed up to appreciate all of our work. Again, a huge thanks to Brendan, Azul and koala for orchestrating another fantastic contest this year! Can’t wait to hear everyone’s thoughts on the pieces and see the BTS work all the artists put into their pieces. The turnout and voting presence was more than ever before and that is something I’m most pleased with this year; not to mention the overall quality of everyone’s submissions has risen along with those factors!
Congratulations to everyone! Looking forward to next year, it can only get better and better!!!
Congratulations to everyone who entered and especially to all the winners! What a tough year to be a voter, so many fun and creative pieces.
Woow, what a great experience! Thank you to koala, brendan, azulryu for organizing this. And thank you @c0ll3ct0r for the appreciation
Huge congrats to the winners of course, but especially to everyone that participated, even with just a comment or a vote.
This year the competition was brutal and the creativity crazy high, be always proud of your art!
Massive well done to the winners (and everyone else) well deserved! Cant believe the talent. Loved @niece , and @oxidelake definitely should get commissioned by TPC.
I’m not even mad
Thanks @Josh .
Thanks for the kind words!
And thank you for the votes for my Dark Houndoom, I’m very grateful!!! Shout-outs to @viridian 's Torchic, yours was my top pick for Recreation, I love handcrafted art so much. And speaking of congrats to @bbobrob for the 1st place Original. Such a fun idea and so well executed, I wish it was a real card!
Some other favorites of mine were @niece 's geodude, @cyberurchin 's froslass, and @chrisundrum 's scizor.
That was fun!!! Congrats to the other winners!
@Versy You were my top pick also, I loved your take on one of my favorite classic cards! I always thought Houndoom had a certain grit and determination that you captured very well
Congratulations to all the winners! I was amazed by the level of creativity of this forum.
As promised, a bit of ‘behind the scenes’ of how I made my piece, Observer of the Crystal.
I was always a fan of Sumiyoshi Kizuki’s ex era art. She uses strong outlines and bold contrast to remarkable effect. In the below image, I was struck by how much the crystals stand out from the otherwise dark and organic background.
I was also a fan of Asuka Ito’s ‘realistic style’ crochet Pokemon, and her use of felt and paper backgrounds.
So for my entry, I wanted to try redoing Torchic in the same realistic style.
I don’t know crotchet, so the Torchic itself is actually made of yarn. There’s a process to turn them into pompoms, which is a bit tedious but gives it a realistic fluffy effect.
(sample image from net)
The beak and crest are made with felt and cloth. The whites of the eyes took forever to cut out of white cloth
I knew it would be tricky to give the crystals the same level of attention with just felt, so opted for actual quartz crystals from Amazon. I stood them up in a little base of clay (they kept falling down during the shoot -.-).
Next was constructing the actual background from the card. I freehand sketched the tree and hills on tracing paper and cut them out of felt.
The most difficult part by far was getting the hanging leaves to appear properly. Asaka Ito’s cards hardly ever have hanging elements, so I had to get creative to prop up the leaves. I had some knex pieces lying around, so I constructed a rudimentary scaffolding to hang the leaves from.
The leaves also kept falling off mid shoot
But once everything was in place, the rest was basically cropping the angle correctly and getting the lighting. I also brightened the crystals a bit in Photoshop to replicate the boldness of the original art and added some sparkles. I realized also I was reversing the order so flipped the picture lol.
Overall, I had a lot of fun with the project, and I would like to make a few more of these pompom 3D cards with other pompoms that I’ve made. Hopefully I will also have a great idea for next year’s contest.
This had my vote as one of my favorite entries. I love seeing the process. It all seems simple when you see such a beautiful end. Yet the ingenuity and creativity to make it happen is anything but ordinary. Well done! This piece had me smiling a long while!
Congratulations to everyone!
& special thanks to @lyleberr for producing this masterpiece:
It’s the happiest I’ve ever seen cubone
Also, your magic eye art gave me a headache. We need a class action lawsuit commercial:
Have you or a loved one experience eye strain or headaches when looking at lyleberr’s art?
You may be entitled compensation.
Call right now!
Congrats everyone! I loved seeing all of the different pieces showcased here, as well as all of the different techniques too. Everyone did a phenomenal job!
I want to express my deep gratitude to all of you for organizing this contest. I’m looking forward to participation in the next year. The work of all participants is excellent!! I can’t believe I managed to take first place in a child category…
Thank you!
So, so impressed by everyone’s entries! Congratulations to the winners and a special shout-out to @ayoveer, @niece, @Versy who made some of my favorite pieces that didn’t get selected. This is one of my favorite things every year and it never disappoints!
I’m glad you liked what I was able to create. Personally I think this was my weakest year but it was not surprise since my time with procreate was very limited due me becoming father and my girl taking all my free time.
And like I stated before original and recreation which I entered were insanely competitive this year.
I thought the idea was still super fun and it definitely made me smile to see it! Totally understand the limited time, but glad you might have a new recruit for the child category in the future!
