Downgrade your entire collection for a stack of cash?

In light of the recent dealings surrounding the PSA 10 illustrator I thought this would be fun to ask.

Would you trade your entire collection for a -1 grade equivalent of each card + the difference in value as a cash lump sum?

If you are a graded collector you would get all your cards in the trade back but at one level lower in the grading system.

If you are a binder collector you would get the same (just imagine your cards have been professionally evaluated but not slabbed).

I’m a binder collector with a quality level of card that I’m happy with, but a large proportion are nostalgic to me, as they are my childhood cards and I would feel sad to trade them. It would be nice to reinvest the difference, but I think I’d say no.

What about you?

I personally try to model my collection goals over what LP is currently doing with his cards. So yeah, if anyone wants a partial digital share of my wailmer binder please DM me. Its gonna take off big

Yes, without question.

If in the future when my 10s are valued by the market at the level I value them? Absolutely. It would in fact be ideal.

I kind of already did make this choice by choosing PSA 9 instead of 10 from the start. I think if i had to downgrade, I’d choose binder instead of psa 8. It would take a lot of money to convince me though

Depends on the amount of money of course, I think I would say yes sooner than the average collector though

Yes I would. Collect the card, not the grade!

Absolutely not. Most of the cards I have in my personal collection have some great stories behind them and I’d never want to get rid of those specific cards just for some money. It’s not just the fact of owning a PSA 10 copy of a card, but owning the PSA 10 copy that I got from a friend/pulled myself/graded myself etc.

I don’t think I would ever downgrade my entire collection, but I may consider downgrading certain cards that I don’t love or enjoy as much if it meant the difference in achieving some collecting goals. The reason for this is, I simply enjoy too many of the cards in my collection to do a wide range across the board downgrade process.

Some of the 10s I own for example are quite expensive and were relatively hard to obtain, so I have too much of an attachment to them to simply downgrade to obtain some other cards.

So it would really depend on each card. Some I would happily downgrade, but many others I wouldn’t.

I would not downgrade my binder collection. Somewhere between 95%-99% of them are NM to Mint. I wouldn’t convert them all to Light Play condition for a lump sum.

Doesn’t have to be LP, that would be quite a big jump. Just imagine they are PSA graded and slip down from an 8 to a 7. You still holding or are you trading?

A big part of the fun for me has become only collecting 10s, it requires more patience and perseverance but I find it more satisfying that way. If I were to sell off and settle for 9s I’d probably just look for cards with clean fronts at any grade. My bank account would definitely prefer I collected 6s

From 10 to 9 ok, it’s not a problem. From 9 to <9, nope :joy:. Especially when it comes to modern cards. Modern PSA 8 cards are considered junk. Rather have a raw copy.

I am in a similar boat as Ethan. I’ve sold cards in better condition that I have doubles of because of their story. Honestly my binders would be the hardest to sell/downgrade.

I’d sell but I wouldn’t downgrade.

No I wouldn’t downgrade for an equivalent lump of cash. If I wanted cash I’d just sell the cards outright

It is my greatest dream and fantasy someone will buy my entire WotC 1st Edition binders in exchange for mint Japanese binders and money for the difference. :frowning:

If you are this person HIT ME UP.

On most cards after selling fees and shipping it doesn’t seem worth it. Now this is dropping from PSA 9s to 8s. And that one grade lower happens to come with print lines most of the time. So no I rather keep what I have. On examples like the illustrator I’d gladly have a lower grade and cash vs a grade higher. I’d use that cash for a ton of cards. Honestly id rather just sell the card all together because trophies don’t give me any nastalgia or joy in owning. For example I could have my entire collection I have now or a few higher end trophies. Or one base 1st edition PSA 9 Zard vs everything I have currently. In any of the examples I’m staying with what I got
