I’ve had this card for awhile and apparently it’s one of the rarer phone cards. Since it’s rare/obscure, I’m curious if anyone knows if it will grade with psa? I recently sent in a batch of phone cards and a few got hit with the not enough info. Anyway if one of the 17 phone card collectors has any info I’d appreciate it!
I have zero answers for you, but I am definitely taking a screenshot of that Metapod to use as an avatar, thanks!
I actually had this card next to it in storage! I don’t know if it’s signed by the same person who did that metapod but this is a glimpse into how I organize.
Wow, I’ve never even seen this phone card! It’s awesome! Since I don’t know anything about it I can’t give a solid answer. I’ll be looking for info on it, and would assume PSA won’t grade it unless they can find the same info.
In my last phone card submission to PSA I also had some phone cards come back because PSA couldn’t find any info on the cards. Was pretty surprised about a couple since they are promotional and dated, but understand it’s hard to find release info since I can’t find much myself.
Do you mind sharing any of the ones that PSA didn’t grade from your submission?
Since these aren’t named with anything very distinguishable they’re really hard to find. Going through ebay I haven’t been able to find any copies (either sold or unsold) - that isn’t really a firm answer for you but it’s the best I’ve got.
I really like the design! I guess for now it will just be a mysterious Metapod. Also I can’t say my organization is much better than yours
I would be surprised if PSA graded it; at least they shouldn’t if they don’t have adequate information to authenticate it, which I doubt they have anything on record.
I know what it is.
I don’t know how they were distributed, nor whether they were anything special such as being received as prizes etc. I haven’t come across anything making reference to the phone cards themselves.
The phone card says:
64ドリーム ニンテンドウスタジアム 1号記念テレホンカード
Translation:
“64 Dream - Nintendo Stadium Issue 1 Memorial Phone Card”
The graphic features the background cover art of the first issue of the Nintendo Stadium Magazine.
The Metapod is a recurring character of the magazine.
The cover has a release date of January 1, 1998
I’ve attached some photos of the magazine.
You can see the cover background art in the top right corner, which also matches the phone card.
There’s the Metapod again.
Two Metapods (there’s one on the end of the stick)
2nd Issue
3rd Issue
4th Issue
As for the rarity of the phone card itself, I have seen a few listed in the past, but on those occasions they had not sold. Like this one.
I am commenting to notify myself to research this later today. I have recently grown a fascination with the phone card series. Is there any way to create a list of examples by date, or is there too many unknowns at present?
Thanks for the info! I knew they had some affiliation with the dream magazines. I actually have the copy with the same art but don’t know how they were distributed. Even trying to enter some of the titles is tough when submitting to psa. Anyway thanks again for the info!
I just saw this, PSA will grade this if you can figure out which magazine it was awarded in / even if you just get photos of the ad or can provide any info on distribution. I bought one and graded it with BGS, but have not figured out what magazine it was a lottery in. Not all phone cards are lottery but almost every single cover art phone card that I have seen is. Though it could range anywhere from 30-5000. If I had to guess this one in particular is surely on the lower end of that number. Matos are examples of ones that would be towards the higher end of that distribution.
