I’m more talking about investing into a business, not necessarily buying from one. Beside yeah you’re right, the money would find its way into the economy somehow, but I’m more thinking investing that $1.3M into a business that could then use that to expand or pay their employees more or launch a new product or something like that.
Aside from the money launderers and PE firms, I wonder how many are crypto entrepreneurs buying the cards to tokenize as fractional shares on the blockchain.
Not sure where to put this but having ignored PSA pop reports for a long while - I hadn’t realized that we were back to morons grading RR bulk. Back in the covid days, Vivid Voltage was the premium example of this. It has a massively inflated population with all kinds of bulk being submitted in the hundreds/thousands.
Checking Mega Evolution, people have graded hundreds of Mega Camerupt, Abomasnow, Manectric etc in their base RR rarity. These are cards worth less than $1. Who the hell is giving these people their liquidity?
At least PSA value bulk is closed again like back then, so the amount of bulk is prevented from making it into slabs.
In general people get caught up too much in these calculations. It’s not really comparable to an actual 2b$ tradfi asset because of liquidity.
Similar to how some crypto tokens are worth 40 billion dollars and a 10m$ spot sell would send it to zero clearing the book.
My point is that when the supply of a super popular card is in rigid collector hands, the mcap can always get absurdedly high, like we have seen so far
Mystery graded card companies. Its all just fodder for gambling
I think generally for modern the release of Surging Sparks (Nov 8th 2024) is generally when the modern segment started taking off. If my memory serves me correctly, that set jumped to MSRP pretty quickly and Prismatic Evolutions was the next set to release (Jan of 2025).
We also had Pokemon Pocket TCG mobile app that released in Oct of 2024. Scott coined the nickname “Pocket Rocket” for the market at the time…that brought in people wanting to collect both digital and physical.
This period though the big Poketubers were very down on vintage…saying the modern arts blow away vintage…and no one would care about the old vintage 1/2 art style. Similar to what you said, I got some great vintage deals around this time period. People seemed very tunnel visioned into modern at the end of 24/early 25
but but “low poops”
Modern was bound to crash. People finally realizing that vintage is where it’s at simple as that.
