Do old back Japanese cards require prepping before autograph?

I have the opportunity to get some old back Japanese Eevee and eeveelutions signed and sketched by Arita later this month. I am wondering if the glossy surface of these cards require any prepping prior so that the ink stays nicely.

Appreciate any inputs

I don’t have a lot of information for you but the following thread may have some useful information.

Be super careful with old backs as they are easy to smudge. Sadly I know from experience after an Arita event … Smudged his autograph, but the personalisation is pristine lol

Regular non-holo old back japanese cards should sign well.

In contrast, modern Japanese non-holos are a big issue for a lot of different markers.

Just wanted to post an update here regarding how my old back, glossy eevelutions did for Arita’s signing event and the marker(s) of choice.

Glad that all the autos didn’t have any smudges and were opaque enough to mostly score 10s except the Jolteon which I think got docked for the first character in Arita’s signature which was a little thin at the top.

This was my choice of the black marker. Dries very fast, opacity on point and did not leave any trace of streakiness or blotching. Works well with modern, non-textured cards as well as those all scored Auto 10s as well.

For coloured markers, I’ll recommend the Pilot Twin. The black marker works well too but the Fine point writes a tad too thin for my liking with autographs.

I didn’t manage to use any paint markers this time but I may in the future and will share them in my collection thread. Hope this helps anyone prepping for an event/show☺️
