According to this article, people were able to poll the Pokemon Center API for products, and then proceed to trigger valid checkouts prior to release. It sounds like all product was depleted before it was actually available.
If there were actually no legit sales, seems like a pretty good way to IP, physical address, and payment ban anyone who ordered anything.

Definitely would be a great way! I saw some people speculating that there definitely wasn’t any legit sales and they did do this to track them but it’s all just guesses. Would be amazing if it’s true. This whole thing is still such a mess
