Crazy Market

Credit card companies are probably loving this boom as much as anyone!

“You financed a Gold Star–what was it? Ray-Quay-Zah? 10% down on a 20K loan at a 24% interest rate? On a Pokeman card?”

“Yes, Dave.”

Oh I’m sure you’re right. There’s just no way this isn’t happening. I’m genuinely very curious who is buying some of this stuff. Obviously there are a lot of wealthy or very wealthy people that collect in the shadows, but I have a hard time believing that is the majority. Most Americans can’t afford a $2000 unexpected expense but every week thousands of cards sell for four and five figures. It just doesn’t add up to me. Clearly a lot of people are swiping that plastic. Guess I shouldn’t be too surprised though. I live in Orlando and watch lots of people go 20K, 30K+ in debt to take the family to see Mickey for a week :man_shrugging:

I think a lot of people are spending big in Pokemon because they don’t have land or a house and are chasing the idea its a replacement physical asset. What would be a down payment, or a kitchen remodel, or savings in case they need a new roof, is going into cards because they don’t believe they’ll ever own a house in the place they want to live.

I think if you’ve been in the hobby long enough, and you collected a lot of the right things, then over time your collection has likely gotten much more valuable. So, you can sell some of your items that are now higher priced and roll that money into other items for your collection instead of going into crazy debt.

There are also people that have been prevalent in the hobby-whether on efour or YouTube, that have made it public that they’ve sold a lot and put that down payment on the house, that they’ve paid off that debt, that they’ve maxed their 401k etc.

Then there are wealthy individuals who can buy those trophy cards, or scarce psa 10s, and attempt to monopolize those van goghs.

Then there’s the new collector that is likely buying lower grade cards they grew up with or modern stuff.

As far as new collectors that don’t have a lot of capital-yea I’m not sure how they can afford the high end stuff without going into debt.

I always wondered how many go into debt for Pokémon or cards in general

Wait 20k in debt for a theme park?

I daresay that we’re almost insulated and spoiled in this hobby relative to the scourge of Disney Adults

It is frightening how much some people spend on the house of mouse

I really like the era, but I have to pick my battles and have conviction in what I collect

As much as I’d love to collect e-Readers, I already collect WOTC, Ex era, and modern—not sure I can swing adding e-Readers to that catalogue
