Cracking CGC Cases

Good to know. I’ve been protecting myself by lining my jackets with PSA cards for years just in case. Guess I’ll switch to BGS.

I rather have a shit case that can be improved than PSA.

My favourite part of this thread is that CGC will get bashed and that’s apparently fine.

Seriously though, anyone able to confirm this with a video or any kind of evidence?

Yea the more I read into things, I’m thinking bgs is the way to go. CGC cases crack and PSA can’t get their shit together and they are going through extensive legal battles over their geading practices.

As someone who has put off grading for going on 2 years; I would like something easy enough to crack so I can resubmit my 9’s, but not easy enough to crack that my cards might be damaged from tripping over air. Can these ppl plz get it right before I begin grading and cracking?

Don’t grade. Sell to me.

The thread was not created with the intention to bash a company just an observation, regardless of my opinion of CGC as a whole that was never mentioned. Many CGC cases will be cracked for binder collections or cross grading to a service that the majority of your collection is. There is no right or wrong service they all have their pros and cons.

I just purchased two more CGC cards to make sure I have them and I will create a video of me cracking the case by hand… I don’t think that’s a crazy claim. If you have a PSA, BGS & CGC graded card laying around list them from 1-3 in terms of sturdiness a quick analysis leads to the results of sturdiest to least sturdy 1. BGS 2. PSA 3. CGC let me know if your conclusion is any different.

And just for the sake of it I just attempted to crack a PSA case with my hands and I did it took much longer and I cracked the top a little and was able to pry it open with my fingers it also shattered in a few places. Where with the CGC case I was able to apply pressure around the whole case cracking it and pry it open using less force.

I’ll make a video, but here is some pictures of both the CGC & PSA cases

Gary: psa is horrible, you need to boycott them, also cgc should give me free grading

Also Gary: lolz I will bash cgc in every thread, unsolicited, for free, because why would I want psa to have any competition?

I never once claimed that your claim is crazy, but it’s 2020 and people can’t just believe all the stuff they read on the internet.

I mean, it’s not ridiculous to ask for evidence to back up a claim and I think it’s pretty fair.

Let me preface this by saying I like CGC a lot. I think the aesthetic of their cases is a clear step above PSA and I think their grading so far has generally shown to be more harsh.

However

I noticed the same thing OP did when I cracked my first CGC yesterday. It came apart much more easily than the PSA cases I’ve cracked did. For me, that’s a good thing. I cracked the slab by taking a pair of pliers to the very top of the case above the label and bending back just a little. It made a crack from the edge of the case to where the top of the label is, and I was able to slip a small flathead screwdriver in between the halves and pop it open. Label and card remained in perfect condition, and now I have a near perfect slab I can temporarily put back together if I wanted to take pictures of any card (with just cropping out the top  ). Apart from the small crack at the top the rest of the slab is completely untouched.

With all of that said, I do only have a sample size of one. I have no idea how other slabs hold up and I can’t comment on how easy it would be to take them apart. I have two other CGC cards, but they’re 10s and I really don’t want to crack them lmao

Boom. Cases aren’t meant to be dropped, or forcefully opened. As long as they don’t go back together, who cares

I have to agree with this too. Is it a nice “feature” to have drop resistant cases? (I put it in quotes because I’m not even sure if PSA designed around that or if it’s just coincidental) Sure. Extra safety is always appreciated. Should it be a mark against CGC if you’re dropping shit and it cracks? I don’t think so. I’m just saying that you need to be careful with your collectibles and not blame the companies that don’t advertise being drop resistant. If one of the big 3 are advertising being drop/shock resistant please let me know because maybe I’ve just been missing it

Woo boy here we go PSA vs. CGC again, this is like the E4 version of the US Election… better move swiftly on…

Seriously though, the video @odds shared raises concerns about tampering and just reinforces my reluctance to buy CGC for my personal collection. If a case is opening up that cleanly, how cleanly can it be resealed by your Average Joe with a different card inside?

Cgc apologized to True Collectible for that card the same day (it was never sealed) which was a one time qc mistake during the grading process.

But you can’t just make your own CGC label that will magically appear in their database. There is always a serial number to go back on and confirm its that same card. And if I remember the original thread the referenced video was posted in, there was something about CGC acknowledging that case as having not been sealed in the first place or they learned something that must have made them do a check on cases after sealing, but I don’t remember exactly what it was.

As r2d2 said, I think this is a non issue because cases aren’t meant to be dropped and for those who want them open and take advantage of the cheaper purchase price they don’t end up in tiny shards such as PSA cases.

Why would you need to make a label? The scammer can just remove the card, put counterfeit in, and keep the genuine label.
