Curious to see how is this a positive move based on how PSA acts?
What evidence or what data makes you believe they will improve their services, if anything, they’ve shown over time that they really are in this for the pure profit of it, with questionable practices and such.
I wonder if I can cross grade my BGS cards to get the same PSA grade now. BGS 9 <> PSA 9 ![]()
The optimist in me is hoping that Collectors are going to pour some resources into trying to get Beckett back to #2 in the grading space. They have a very powerful brand name, it feels silly to buy the company if the plan is to just remove them as competition. Beckett has been on a long downward spiral anyways, if removing them was the plan they could have just…waited
All the grading companies are here for the pure profit. My guess is that they improve the submission process and their overall website experience. I think they would want to preserve Beckett and not let it die since the MTG crowd and Black Label chasers really enjoy Beckett.
This was the inevitable outcome for Beckett. They have been asleep at the wheel for years. The incentives are there for PSA to improve Beckett. PSA now gets the benefit of a black label while simultaneously not adjusting their own grading scale.
Make Beckett Great Again
Sort of but they’ve been doing fine the last year, mainly due to increase in demand (overall bull market + One Piece).
The only real test would be how they would perform in the next bear market…if they didn’t action any updates or use their $ gained to improve services then they would have absolutely died off.
But alas, they likely used their submission boost to improve their sale value.
Overall, BGS management if you see this - you guys should be the case study of how NOT to run a business.
Needs a TAG, C3P0 or R2D2 as well lol
Personally all I want is consistency in Europe.
Beckett Germany is basically a different grading company.
We can’t sub to PSA easily.
CGC have long turnaround times.
The only good grading company is PCA (French) but they don’t have much value on the secondary market outside of french cards in France.
I sent this into BGS EU twice.
It was a PSA 9 new cert with an outside chance of a 9.5 (I was expecting a BGS 9++ which was fine as I have a 9++ set)…got a quad 9 first go. Hmm, ok resub.
How on earth didn’t they change a 9 centering grade to a 10? And 8.5 surface on a practically perfect card (no print lines or scratches)? Corners aren’t bad enough for 8.5 too.
This also was a new cert PSA 9.
A BGS 8.5? It’s basically pristine. The only issue I saw was it being oc on the front/ back but it got a 9.5 centering score
8 surface means a dent but there was none. Very confusing.
Finally, this is one of the cleanest base shadowless cards I’ve ever owned and it absolutely deserves a 9.5 grade. I’ve graded 3x 9.5 Shadowless Raichus and this is the best one. Sent it in twice and they refuse to bump it.
I would love to send this to the USA Beckett hub as they grade completely differently (more fair and consistent) but it’s been made harder die to tariffs.
Sorry, just ranting.
Whatever collectors do, please just uniform your grading standards for BGS EU/USA as the current EU hub is atrocious.
The only good grading company in Europe is PGS (subjectively of course lol). I don’t care about any ‘murican company coming into our market at all. I can see the European market becoming completely independent of the US market in the near future.
Support your local companies, ‘European Grading’ is fantastic, imo.
Why is everyone acting like this is a dagger in the heart for Beckett? Are people that dimwitted? Beckett has been lazy, unenthusiastic, stuck in the mud.. Doing jack sh*t. And their BGS 10s STILL hold a premium over PSA 10s. Imagine doing the LEAST and your 10s still are worth more than companies doing the most lol. Beckett has been declining and not doing much to promote themselves at all. This is great news.
Now that they have been acquired maybe they can start making some moves finally. Better customer service, new slabs, who knows. Either way Im glad PSA bought them out. They needed a boost in marketing and a lot of other changes. Im so confused how people are saying this is horrible for Beckett. Ignorance and hating of a grading company really makes people sound petty.
Beckett now has a chance to be sold in Gamestops just like psa cards are being sold. They have the opportunity to make BIG changes and partnerships. I hope this elevates Beckett. So much hate in this community just wanting to see companies fail. Negativity and doubt. Beckett is an OG grading company that has been consistent with their grading standards for years. Which is rare. Im rooting for them and Im also rooting for PSA. People love to put down companies to boost their own collections. I hope this is a positive outcome for both parties.
Reading the responses on this thread, I don’t get that impression. The memes of “its only a flesh wound” have been going on for a year now
If anything, the opposite has been happening in the past few years: All major American companies opened / will open European locations while like 80% of the new European companies established in the pandemic have already closed their doors again.
i dont think beckett has a chance of destroying anybody somehow the tag shits are about to surpass them ![]()
So for those of us up north PSA has it set up where Canadians can submit for grading and not get hit with tariffs.
Wonder if they can set this up for Beckett - I think right now if you submit you’ll get hit?
May I ask if you’ve used BGS directly? It’s very important because you can’t talk the talk if you haven’t walked the walk.
Let’s assume you use BGS. Right now, the order tracking is very poor and slow. What does PSA do that Beckett doesn’t, and what could be implemented? Better order status tracking is a start. At PSA, your order is usually marked as “Arrived” the next day or at least very quickly. With Beckett, you’re in a limbo. It’s stressful to have a four-figure order marked as “Delivered” only by the courier tracking with no confirmation from Beckett. Some people might not care, but many others get nervous and lose sleep over that kind of emotional stress.
Then there’s the scanning service that everyone wants. It shouldn’t even be called a “service” we have to ask for; it’s just a standard for grading companies nowadays. Every new company, even the most obscure ones, now provides scans of the slab. It’s embarrassing that a professional company as big as BGS, one of the “Big Three,” still hasn’t made this a standard. Furthermore, we can all agree that their customer service sucks. While the population report is better than in the past, it’s still confusing.
Beckett’s market share is currently less than 4%. I don’t think PSA’s parent company purchased them to kick them out of the market. They could’ve done that to any emerging company like TAG, so why throw money away? The CEO of Collectors seems like a very clever guy and a true collector. He was previously a BGS collector before moving to PSA. I believe he sees the potential in BGS and realizes it’s been poorly managed. Acquiring BGS to improve it and make more money seems much more logical than destroying it.
I think this is ultimately a way to remove a competitor. I have a hard time seeing the benefit to PSA otherwise. The benefit of consolidation to the corporation is the ability to remove redundancies and cut costs. But streamlining BGS has little reward when their volume is a rounding error on PSA. I don’t clearly see the financial benefit.
Beckett punches higher than it’s weight in terms of reputation. I have a hard time seeing BGS being a grading option in the long term but maybe the Beckett name or black label will continue on in some form. Maybe I’m missing something or just not seeing the vision of this.
Ultimately this is not good for collectors though. The amount of consolidation in this industry in last few years has been too much
I also wonder how the BGS hack interacted with the timing of this now that its a liability Collectors has to inherit
