What was the biggest sacrifice you’ve made collecting? Had to sell x to get y for example.
For me, I sold some larger items in my collection to help with making some upgrades on my house.
Was it worth it for you in retrospect?

Not huge in the grand scheme of things but I recently sold my Expedition and Aquapolis pack artsets to help with some stuff for the new house after I moved into a new place.
Stings a bit but I was able to get a nice payout without losing a lot of items from my collection. Also they were stashed in a box never getting looked at so I’m not sure I’ll ever try to replace those.

Throughout the past few years (last decade) I’ve sold big parts of collection(s) (not just Pokémon) or complete collections just to be able to pay bills.
Actually in the mid of doing the exact same thing right now. Because, my life keeps going in the same cycle; job, depression, unemployment, no welfare checks/ending welfare checks, empty bank account.
Was/Is it worth it? Yes.I actually just own to much crap, and me selling stuff at this moment is just a continuation of what I started summer 2018; sell my junk so I have less stuff to carry with my when I move.

I have sold off many cards the past 2 years to pay for damage to my house caused by flooding. Me and my wife went all in on our purchase since the house we bought was all fully remodeled with new appliances, AC, water heater, furnace etc. We thought if everything was new we could live here for a couple years with no other major expenses, we could get our savings built up again. 28 days after we closed on our house it flooded. Our insurance did not cover flooding since we are technically not in a “flood plain” it only covers if we had a water leak in our house but not by natural disaster. This led me to buying nothing for a year and the past year I have slowly started to buy a few cards again, but as we finally have our placed cleaned up and are starting to remodel I’m finding myself selling more cards I planned on keeping.

i had to sell a sealed case of jungle boxes. it still haunts me. but i was able to get first ed base packs because of it and it was well worth it.

6 months ago I sold my PSA 9 Shadowless Charizard for 1400$ to pay for a trip. My very good friend passed away suddenly leaving behind her 6 year old son so I took him and my 5 year old daughter on a road trip. I’ll never own a comparable card again, and it was a very strong 9, but sometimes life throws you out of your normal perspective and you just take a leap of faith.

Sold off a good part of my collection about 2 years ago to buy a car. Overall I think it was worth it, obviously there are a few items I wish I didn’t sell, but at the time it was the right decision.

Iv sold plenty of cards and some sealed products that I wish I didn’t let go of. But everything I’ve done has led me to where my collection is today and I’m very happy with it. Can’t have the best of both worlds
I used to always have items to sell that could help fund booster boxes or other items so I wasn’t “spending” as much. I barely have anything for sale anymore and basically everything I own in my collection isn’t going anywhere for a long time (hopefully)

When I was a young weeb my dream was to have an amazing anime room. I now have that, along the way I have sacrificed many things such as the many nights waking up freezing because my room is at a constant 18°C. No longer having free space on my desk because of pachinko machine collection. But the biggest sacrifice of all.

Just selling off part of my collection because having all your assets in a trading cards isn’t wise. Would i have been better off holding, yes, but is it smart? No.

I’m constantly consolidating and selling lower value items to buy higher value items. I’ll always take one holy grail over any quantity of other cards. It’s difficult to let go of some items, but I don’t have any regret.

I never yet had to make any sacrifices except in the opposite direction in order gain parts of my collection. Not going out on days off, not eating out, just cutting out doable things for me in order to save more has been my main sacrifice, but i dont ever buy beyond extra funds as well. So, all and all, for me that day has yet to come but im sure something might occur along the way for the other route.

I haven’t had to sell anything, but I do think perhaps I’m overly conservative with buying. I guess I’ve always viewed my collecting as a form of playing with money instead of serious investing, so I limit myself to 10% of savings at most in cards. But I can’t say I regret it because what I really care about, even more than collecting, is traveling to visit friends and family, buying a house, having pets, saving for soon-to-come kids’ college, and being on track to be able to retire early (even if I don’t ultimately choose to do so). So I have assets mostly in traditional investments. Obviously, there are people on this site who have achieved very much investing in cards and have fulfilling lives in many ways, but I’m personally not willing or perhaps savvy enough to embrace that risk.
And it’s true that it’s a sacrifice in a sense because it’s a lot less fun to have assets tied up in ETFs and index funds than shiny artwork =P.
When me and my husband retire we are going to be that elderly daycare couple that produces eggs in Gold/Silver.

Glad you got your house and family taken care of, that’s what’s most important! My house is also near a flood plane so I keep all my collectibles out of the basement on the second floor lol.
