Hey all,
I’m looking to start collecting the early sets again (base through to neo series) and I’m unsure weather to collect the sets in japanese or English. I’ve given this a lot of thought and I’m still stuck in the middle
At the moment I’m leaning toward Japanese, and only for the simple reason is I like the holo pattern of them better than the star style holo of the English versions.
The cards are just for my binder collection, not to be graded or sold etc.
Any opinions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, drewy
Thanks for the info milhouse!
Money is a factor which is why 1st editon English cards are probay out of the question, and is why I cant do English and japanese, rather only one or the other.
English would be great seeing it’s what I collected growing up, but English wouldn’t be the same if they’re not first editon
I like collecting English just because it is what I am used to and they are easy to collect. Even with most of the first editions the only really expensive cards are the first edition base and then the first edition shining cards which are a distant second. It is doable especially if you arent too concered with grading. The alternate prints are fun to collect as well. I can’t say much about Japanese.
Also do the jungle and fossil japanese sets have the non holo variant of the holo rares or do they only run the holos in the sets?
Out of about the ten boosters I’ve ever opened I’ve never come across a non holo rare as you would in the English set.
I don’t know specifically what Gary is talking about with japanese cards, but the exclusive japanese promo cards are unparalleled. If you are just talking sets, sure, most newer sets are easier to obtain. However, there is nothing in the hobby that compares to exclusive japanese promo cards.
Since you mentioned these are for personal enjoyment, do both for a bit and see what you personally prefer.
I’m only collecting the early sets at the moment. Promo sets will have to wait until I finish the original sets.
I think I will start off with japanese based on everyone’s input so far. And I have some japanese cards already so it’s sort of a head start.
Thanks for the input everyone it’s greatly appreciated!
And Gary thank you for the kind offer but at the moment I’m not able to afford to buy all the sets at once unfortunately but thank you!
Ah sorry I didn’t realize it was limited to just sets. I would still recommend doing at least one set of each and seeing how you feel about the artwork, quality and whatnot.
