Collecting (Almost) Every Base Set Charizard Artwork Card!

Hey guys! It’s been years since I have posted here, but I wanted to share an important journey (for me) that I’m currently doing.

I am working on completing the entire catalog of base set zard artwork. There is a ton of them, some I’m probably leaving off of my list, but I keep adding the ones I forgot about. I think I have basically all of them listed (besides error cards like black dot, thick stamp/thin and whatnot). I really wanted to document this for myself to go back and look back on. Also to encourage people who are working on sets, master sets, goals and whatever hunting you have going on!

I am skipping the jumbo cards as I do not like them. I believe there are two of them. I am also skipping non public release ones such as the Creatures 25th anniversary card. I’m on the fence about the Evo Foreign Staff ones, but I have them added as well

The catalog -

The Base Set Charizard is what made me fall in love with Pokemon. I never was able to pull one as a kid in 1999, but my mom did buy me one, and this is where the journey starts -

My first Charizard my mom bought me in 2000. I graded this in 2020

I stoppec collecting pokemon for a very long time. On lunch at work in 2020 I snagged these raw for very cheap and graded them -

Later that week I heard of XY Evolutions which was a base set remake. I grabbed both of these for pennies on the dollar and graded as well -

I still had the itch of never pulling a base set charizard as a kid. I wanted to pull my own. I bought 4 Kanto Power boxes and pulled 3 holo Zards. These are the 2 I have left after gifting one to a friend. One of my fav Pokemon days ever -

I took another break and got into Celebrations in late 2021… cuz you know… another Zard OG artwork. Got a UPC for the Gold and pulled the holo myself -

Slowly started to get more. These were aquired in 2022/23 -

My neighbor sold me another base set Zard for cheap and I snagged. The legendary collection right after in 2024 -

This is when I started to get serious. I went to my LCS in late 2024 and saw this sitting in the case. I couldnt believe what I was seeing. I bought it for $2500. I took a photo because I knew this was going to be something I’d never want to forget -

I graded the 1st edition. Now worth $7,000. I went to a card show and traded an Gengar for the Shadowless raw. Graded it. Then a week and a half ago I bought the 1st edition German -

(12/15/2025) 1st Edition Italian ready for grading. Hoping for a PSA 1 lol. Also an absolute GRAIL of mine. Evolutions Staff Prerelease. These are crazy rare and I’m happy to have finally gotten one

(12/16/2025) Got some really low pop cards in today. Both are under 200 graded by PSA for all grades. Absolutely love the Chinese Classic Collections. So beautiful in person

(12/24/2025) Got some BANGERS in today. The foreign Evolutions cards are a bit tough to find. Surprised only 72 of these French ones have been graded with PSA. Also, had to get the Arita signature on a card I needed for my set. Absolutely love it

(12/26/2025) HUGE day for me. 2 1st editions. I definitely have to slow down lol

(12/31/2025) Capping off the year with probably the most important mailday so far. Sniped the Korean 8.5 a day after an 8 sold for $4,000. I feel I got the 8.5 for half off, but who knows! Only 150 graded Korean 1st editions exist with PSA. This seems very high when we talk about the card next to it. A Spanish Evolutions Prerelease Staff. Only 4 exist with PSA in all grades. I’m speechless and so happy I was able to sell some of my PC to get these

Thanks so much for reading. I will be updating when new ones come

Awesome collection. I should’ve gotten the Evolutions Pre-Release Staff one when it was readily available lol

Definitely paid more than I wanted to on that one lol. Do you know by chance how big the print run is on the staff cards? I’ve been looking everywhere to find out

Nah, they barely release any numbers. If I had to guess it’s 4 figures for English, other languages are lower I’d say.

You know what you like! It’ll be great to see them all together when it’s all complete :slightly_smiling_face:

I don’t know if you purposely left it out, but there’s a Corocoro jumbo card with the Base Set artwork too.

I did leave that one out as well as the legendary collection jumbo card. Not really interested in the big cards for display purposes. Thank you though! I really appreciate it

You’ve got some of the most difficult ones out of the way! Very nice!
Do you consider Japanese No Rarity a different artwork or not?
Also not sure if you know but Unlimited Korean exists too I believe

Thank you! I was avoiding the no rarity and cards like that. I think there’s a couple more I could have added and skipped. Is that cheating? lol

I couldn’t ever find the Korean base set unlimited. I could find the 1st edition, but never the regular unlimited version. Do you have any info on it? Nothing has come up in my search

I think it’s the rarest Base Set Charizard, total PSA population is 5…there are a few threads on the forum which have further details about how hard they are to find.

It’s your collection so you get to decide! I think the unlimited is a lot more difficult to find, but it does exist

Oh wow that one might be impossible to find. Thanks for the info!

Nice collection! Best of luck continuing it.

Thank you! I’m only doing the prerelease/staff for English since I don’t count those as like official releases. If I finish the whole list I might try to get those as well, but that might be years down the line. Can’t believe I missed the other though thank you

I definitely have never seen the last one on your list so I missed the Spanish and the creatures it looks like

Edit- omg the last creatures deck zard sold for $35,000. It does say it wasn’t available to the public so I guess I have an out on this one lol

Yeah, the Creatures Deck was given to TPC employees and some illustrators, so that’s indeed an unofficial release. I would deem it a nice-to-have. And considering its current market price, probably more realistically a ‘won’t-have’.

Everything else are public releases though, including the Korean unlimited Base Set and foreign Prerelease STAFF cards. But I can understand if you skip them for now. The English STAFF version is already pretty hard to find (for a decent price), but the foreign STAFF versions I almost never see anymore these days, tbch.

You convinced me to add the staff languages lol I think I’ll just count the staff and prerelease as one like I did the English. I’ll edit the list shortly

Awesome collection!!! Base Set Charizard is one of the most emblematic cards from Pokémon TCG …

There are a lot of variants among all languages … I’m not sure if you’re considering the reprint from DP era … it’s based directly of Expansion Pack Charizard …

Intense Fight in the Destroyed Sky (092/092)

  • Japanese 1st Edition
  • Japanese Unlimited

Stormfront (103/100)

  • English
  • Spanish
  • French
  • German
  • Italian

Unrelated, but “Intense Fight in the Destroyed Sky” is an awesome name for an expansion …

Thank you so much! Are the ones from your post different from the ones I have on my list? I did account for the “same” zard art on the stormfront ones and am counting them. I believe they are on the list, unless they remade those as well

Yes … that’s true … Spanish variant is hard to find … It looks like this (I don’t remember if I have the full image … It might be stored somewhere in my device)

The Spanish one is actually on ebay right now. Pricey, but there is 1!

No, I checked your list and they appear there … I thought that no … It was my mistake

Btw, after checking your list, there’s a missing variant …

On March 2000, CoroCoro Comic distributed a Jumbo Charizard [English] as an insert of its April volume. It has the CoroCoro Comic Dragon (AmiAmi) where the expansion symbol should go and in the bottom part appears the CoroCoro Comic logo and the distribution method.

On your list, this variant should go between “Base Set 4th Print UK” and “Legendary Collection Holo”

Other missing variants are:

  • Box Topper S1/S4 :united_states:
  • Classic Collection 003/032 :south_korea:

Box Topper S1/S4 :united_states::

Charizard was one of the 4 Jumbo Box Topper cards from Legendary Collection. It’s a Reverse Holo card and only available in English

Classic Collection 003/032 :south_korea: :

Classic Collection was also available in Korean
