Champions League Promos in Japan (SM Era and Beyond)

What is the Champions League?

At the start of the SM era, TPC reformed organized play system in Japan and introduced Champions League (CL) as a tier of the newly-formed Championship Series system.

Champions League is the Japanese equivalent of Regional Championships in Play! Pokémon, which is held 4 times per season in different major cities in Japan and allows up to 2000 or more players to compete for prizes and chances to participate in higher-tier tournaments including Pokémon Japan Championships (PJCS) or even Pokémon World Championships (WCS).

This article is about the Champions League tournaments in modern competitive play in Japan (not to be confused with the legacy Champion’s League which @HumanForScale introduced in his excellent article).

The CL series often gains attentions from promo collectors as it issues the most promotional cards of all organized play in Japan since the SM era, including participation promos, promos from side events, promos only obtainable by reaching later stages of each tournament, and finally the trophy cards for winning all the way to the top.

Regular Pokémon Promos

Below is a list of all regular Pokémon promos released in CL. Most of them were either participation prizes or prizes players can earn by trading a small amount of Play Points they got through the tournaments or side events.

The only exceptions in the list are Lunala (066/SM-P) and Solgaleo (067/SM-P), which were only given to the tournaments’ top players, and hence becoming hurdles for promo completionists.

Another card catching many collectors’ attention is the full art Pikachu (068/SM-P). Although originally given to all participants in CL 2017 Okayama and Final and thus wasn’t considered rare, the great illustration had made the card a must-have among increasing number of Pikachu collectors. This card also has a variant 061/S-P with the same artwork but a different stamp, which we will mention later.

Pokémon-GX and V Promos

There is a very clear line between the cards issued before and after 2020:

  • Before 2020, players can earn these cards by trading in Play Points, although these cards require more Play Points than regular Pokémon promos. Also, promos left over from previous distributions are still available for redeem in follow-up tournaments.
  • To reduce the risk of COVID infections, tournaments from 2021 to late 2022 were no longer held with side events, and these cards are given out instead to players obtaining certain numbers of wins in the tournaments. In addition, cards distributed in the previous seasons are no longer carried into the next season, making each card harder to obtain.

Two cards in this category are worth a mention. The first is Indeedee V (059/S-P) which is stamped with the CL 2020 stamp but given out in CL 2021. The card was speculated to be planned for CL 2020 Kyoto or Miyagi, but as the tournaments were cancelled due to COVID, the card was passed on to CL 2021, allowing Traditional Chinese copies of this card - released two months earlier through the language-exclusive Infinite Power expansion - to become the first language released for this card.

The other card is Victini V (243/S-P) which features artwork from TPCI’s V Battle Decks. The V Battle Deck copy was an art variant of the Victini V card from the Sword & Shield set, but when the Japanese copies were first distributed in CL 2022 Kyoto, TPCI misprinted the card with contents from the Battle Styles Victini V. As card contents and artwork must match in all languages, TPC immediately announced an errata which banned the error copies from all organized play and offered corrected copies to recipients from CL 2022 Kyoto through mail, which is why CL 2022 Kyoto was listed twice in the list. Recipients from all other CLs received the corrected copy (shown on the right), and the error copy (left) spiked up immediately after the announcement.

Trainer Promos

Trainer promos are also released regularly, with one Item and one Stadium card released every season starting from CL 2018.

Items

Players will receive the Item promo of the season if they reached top 64 in a CL tournament or “clearing” Second Stage in CL 2018 to 2020 Juniors by earning 3 straight wins (the estimates are marked as 32+ because only the 32 fastest players to clear Second Stage can advance into the next stage, which implies that there were at least 32 recipients but might have more). Although the Item promos are only stamped reverse-holo copies of regular Item cards, the high bars of winning them have turned them into another hurdle for collectors wishing to complete Japanese promos.

One thing to note about the Item promos is that if TCG entered a new era in the middle of a season, the Item promo may also be replaced with a copy from the new era, consequently reducing distribution counts of both the older and the newer copies. Pal Pad (406/SM-P and later 031/S-P) from CL 2020 had run into this change, which combined with a season shortened by COVID turned its both copies into the rarest and most expensive cards of all Item promos.

Supporters

There were only 2 Supporter promos given in CL: one for participating in a side event, and the other by earning at least 1 Championship Point in the 2020 season.

Stadiums

Stadium promos from CL feature exclusive artworks popular among collectors and represent finales of each season. To receive these cards, players must battle through organized tournaments within the season including Trainers Leagues, City Leagues, CLs and PJCS, where they will earn Championship Points (CPs) based on their tournament results. Once they reached a certain points, they will receive the Stadium promo of the season in October. For these promos, market prices of earlier copies can be significantly higher than recent copies as CP requirements to receive one are much higher back then.

Energy promos

During the SM era, there was only one set of basic Energy promos released, which was stamped as CL 2018 promos but distributed throughout all seasons until 2020. These cards could be obtained by trading in Play Points.

In contrast, SWSH era had a separate set of Energies released every season with stamps representing the year of release except the 2021 season, when CL 2020 copies - presumably unreleased due to shortened season - were carried over and released instead. Distribution method was also changed to simply by participating in the tournament.

Trophies

And yes, the holy grail of all tournament promos.

CL followed previous generations and offered its top winners trophies in forms of specially printed cards in frames. The cards given out were Victory Decorations in SM era and Victory Proofs in SWSH era, and are stamped with the venues in which they were earned.

SM Era Artwork (Feb. 2017 to Sep. 2019)

SWSH Era Artwork (Dec. 2019 to Dec. 2022)

Distribution counts of each card are listed in the tables below. Some collectors who read sources such as Bulbapedia may find some unfamiliar numbers in the tables, which was due to Bulbapedia miscounting distribution numbers in some early CL events whose winners were not determined by single elimination tournaments. The numbers in Bulbapedia were corrected prior to this writing.

This article was inspired by another thread on the forum that raised my curiosity on CL promos. Anyone collecting these feel free to make the best use of this post!

Very nice guide and checklist. Helps a lot if you are trying to collect a sub-set of CL promos. I wonder what prompted them to change the design of the stamp from Japanese to English starting 2019. I kind of preferred the Japanese stamp tbh. English stamps seems to be catered towards international participants / collectors, which also does not seem likely.
Thanks again!

Cheers!

Beautiful post. I’m a big rare item and trainer collector. I have the first 8 on trainer list. This was exactly what I was looking for in my previous inquiry.

You should work as a detective or solving murders if you don’t already!

Thanks for the appreciation!

The design change actually started from 2018. You can consider 2017 as the start of TPC’s effort to reform the organized play system and 2019 as the end:

  • 2017: introduced CLs as regional tournaments and CPs for qualification
  • 2018:
    • Introduced Trainers League, City League and Station League, which are tournaments organized at stores level. In the past, winning store level tournaments only offers chances to compete in regionals. This is no longer the case as the newly introduced leagues offers CPs which could count towards PJCS qualification. New designs were adopted for the leagues’ logos.
    • “Japan Champion Decision Tournament” was renamed to PJCS and its logo redesigned.
  • 2019: CL logo redesigned to match other leagues. The entire organized play system in Japan was renamed to “Pokémon Card Game Championship Series”, and Trainers League, City League, CL and PJCS are named as the four major tiers of this new system.

The newly-formed system works more as a whole top-to-bottom competitive play system. It is possible that TPC wants a more organized system for both Japan and Asia-Pacific regions it was about to expand to (in fact the Asia Championship Series system deployed in Taiwan, HK, Thai and Indonesia works very close to the current system in Japan), but only TPC can tell.

Great topic and article! Are you ok if I alter the formatting and add a table of contents ?

Absolutely, feel free to modify it any way you feel easier for folks to read. I’ve been focusing on contents so it definitely helps if the formatting can also be polished!

Done! I added images too of the cards. If you want, you can copy and paste the tables into the OP or a post below and they can be added directly instead of as an image

Thanks for helping on the format!

I was a bit hesitant to paste the whole table as I’m not sure if there’s a way to format them properly for reading, but if posting the table directly would help sharing and maintaining information, then I’ll be glad to provide them!

Table pasted into post, let me know your thoughts!

I can understand why you had them as links before, since it’s indeed a bit too much scrolling to read the information now imho. But, luckily we have collapsible spoiler tags you could use here around the tables perhaps?

Greetz,
Quuador

The tables are indeed too long and wode for mobile but I think they can be shrunk by combining some of the columns.

The benefit of the table is that it’s easier to add new rows for like 2023 and 2024 and also makes the thread show up in search when you are looking for information on a particular card

I won’t have time to edit anything over the next few days, if you want, you can put the tables in a spoiler tag or just add then to a post below for now

Yeah the article was way too long with the tables, and also it’s causing lags in the editor.

I’ll put the tables in spoiler tags for now, might spend the next few days trying to figure out how to consolidate some of the rows. Thanks for the suggestion!
