This is so bad its comical. Aside from the fact that all of these cards (except the wide bordered Flame Swordsman) are forgeries, their claim is that Konami actually intended to make square cut and wide bordered square cut cards. If youre a yugioh collector with a basic understanding, this is laughable. These are cropped data files or just before die-cutting.
If you look at images in the Shonen Jump magazine (1999 Issues 6 and 7 are the best but there are others) the design is always the same. None of the cards in their article actually use that design, but they graded them anyways of course.
In every image of a Magic & Wizards card, the copyright always reads “1999 KONAMI”. All of the forgeries use a slash between 1999 and KONAMI - 1999/KONAMI.
I wont get into exhaustive detail but this wasnt really the most damning fact but it is the easiest way to identify the forgeries.
Oh man the amount of times I’ve seen this Yugioh stuff pop up here lately is insane. The last time I heard about YuGiOh before all this was when there was a hygiene intervention.
We have heard you talk about the Magic & Wizards YGO cards many times over the past few weeks. I even read your investigative paper in full.
I appreciate that you care so deeply about these cards and their history, but every thread and every post that you engage with does not need to rehash your anger toward CGC or these cards.
You seem like a cool and knowledgable person with a very intense fixation on this topic. I see that it’s become your passion with how much energy, money, and time that you have poured into it, but at some point, you have to let it go. You are not going to find what you are searching for here, because most of us are wildly unprepared to speak to you about niche YGO cards.
Anyway, I hope that you eventually find peace with this. And I say all of this with care and respect for you.
Don’t let others discourage you from posting about what you want in the appropriate section. There is a whole corner of this forum allotted for other tcg’s, we talk and share about a lot of them.
It’s a worthwhile debate in the yugioh world, it’s fair game, and finding truth through conversation/research is totally welcomed and some people here care about yugioh, so if others don’t want to see, they can simply not read. Really not difficult. We have threads for Harry Potter, yugioh, and many other card games. Our original site even used to have a dedicated section to “other tcgs”. You post what you want to if it is in good faith. Idk why some folks feel the need to control the conversation or whatever. Things that don’t gain traction just get buried in the mesh anyway, it’s natural demand that should dictate anything and that alone. You do what you like amigo.
Oh for my part I feel quite annoyed for charlatans like those running CGC act as an authority when they’ve been proven wrong so many times. So I for one especially welcome them being proven wrong if that were to come to pass, and I’m sure if you came to be wrong you’d admit that likewise, unlike them. So, again, more power to you.
Its okay for people to disagree with whatever I put out, but a lot of times its either someone who owns a card (there are a few), someone selling one on consignment (there are a few), or someone who has been convinced by the first two that its misinformation.
BL - it isn’t. As with all things I’m open to a discussion on the merits of the research and in this specific case - the article I’ve posted. The article itself is really just a testament to how little CGC knew about these when they authenticated. They allowed themselves to be convinced by an interested party that the cards were real and published all of the party’s conjecture to go with it.
True story - before they graded these, they emailed me to ask me if they were authentic and what I knew about them. For several reasons mentioned in other threads, I decided not to respond and regret that decision.
I appreciate the adult sentiments here. It is an important topic for reasons I’d prefer to keep private. I try and publish information on the truth in many places so that magazines, grading companies, auction houses and other entities can see (at the very least) another take on the topic. CGC dominates the messaging space and they can’t be removed from ebay easily simply because yugioh is such a small hobby. Were this a pokemon problem - the solution would have already been put into effect.
You are a genuinely nice guy Dyl. <3 Ive been reading so much of the same obsessive shoehorned posts about this YuGiOh/CGC topic that I was starting to feel like I was taking crazy pills. It’s giving serious Buffalo Bill vibes
I really appreciate your post and comments unlike some other people here, who are trying to hinder or interefere with the discussion for whatever reason (maybe they have a tons of CGC slabs?).
I think it is important to bring up CGC’s business practices and their response with controversies in the past to determine what they will do in the future especially with the Pokemon Prototypes right now.
Simply dismissing these post or moderate them when you are not a moderator is not helpful at all.
I personally did not know about CGC’s controveries with Yugioh or Comicbooks a week ago and it will certainly influence my decisions on why I will not buy any CGC slabs or related items.
While it may not be true to everyone, business practice and ethics matter to me.
And the past few days have shown that CGC lacks in those two areas.
Thanks for the reply. I don’t think its intentional on their part, but the result of bad authentication practices. They did very little real research into this stuff - that much is clear - and their publications show that. I won’t really belabor it but there isn’t a difference between how they approached the Magic & Wizards stuff and the Pokemon Prototypes. Its the same flippant approach towards authentication and the cost of that has never been more evident.
There are a few people here who claim this space as a Pokemon place, and who have taken issue with my passion and resolve here, but its not really an issue for me. TBH it would be best for me to ease up a bit. I had some encouraging conversations today (can’t say much) but I’m hopeful that we are moving in the right direction on the yugioh piece. So far, the market has been an honest reflection of the truth - which is that despite a powerful and deceitful campaign to showcase these as authentic, the Yu-Gi-Oh! hobby largely does not believe that they are.
I am happy to have been able to bring that sort of integrity to the market and to prevent what happened in Pokemon from happening in Yu-Gi-Oh! It could have easily been a much larger problem.
Thanks again and HMU if you ever have any questions about yugioh stuff.
@Dyl@chrispy If you guys are tired of reading Yu-Gi-Oh related threads please, don’t click on every Yu-Gi-Oh related thread you see to read them whole and then rant about it, just move along. I do care for these forgeries because if everyone stops talking about them, it will all be forgotten and CGC will move to the next scam (idk, like Pokemon Prototypes right???). I will always support Ghezzi and the work he has done for the community even if it’s not Pokemon related. Thanks
Dude you’ve been following him around like a little santa’s helper whenever he brings this topic up on EVERY thread. I left exactly 2 comments on e4 forums after seeing this stuff nonstop. Also I’ve already seen official responses by PSA saying this guy doesn’t work for them. I kept my mouth shut since I don’t care but like Dyl said, give it a rest.
Thanks for showing me the email they sent about this. I like to keep these records and Im always happy to shake some loose from the tree. No im not an employee but theres some terminology youre not aware of since you probably dont contract and possibly dont work.
I am a contractor and have contracted with them since 2018. I can show the pay stubs but itd be beneath me really. I assume Vernon sent you this since this was when he tried to get me fired the second time.
