CGC Pristine 10

I was on a hiatus from the hobby when CGC Pristine 10s were introduced.

The black label seems like a nice touch.

I would like to know the opinions whether is it really hard to get comparing to a BGS Black Label.

Curious to know what are your opinions when trying to get CGC Pristine 10s.
Would it be a difficulty scale of 0.5/10? I been seeing alot of them in the market lately.

Black label cgc is actually somewhat easy to get. I would say just a bit harder than a psa 10 but not by a whole lot. Bgs black label is much MUCH harder to get. And commands a price point to match. Cgc does not.

sounds logical. these guys are crawling around in the market. thanks

CGC had a ā€œblack labelā€ which was discontinued.

Their pristines aren’t meant to be perfect like a black label is. Which imo is a good thing because all that kind of grading does is ask for skepticism. I still can’t say I’m a fan of the ā€œ10 but coolerā€ label thing, but clearly the general market is all for it

I guess it worked for them to try and give a ā€œbudget black labelā€ category to the market

It definitely worked! For a while they weren’t getting much premium at all but it appears that now people are warming up to them and prices are growing

I don’t really collect them myself but they look nice and the label is cool

It seems to be similar to the old Pristine standard. They used to have the ā€˜perfect’ grade which seemed to be basically equal to Black Label in overall grading difficulty, but they got rid of that under the new standard and simplified it probably because the allure of it was not on the same level as a Black Label so they may have thought it wasn’t worth keeping around.

Here’s some data on Shining Fates Charizard VMAX from over the past couple months for your reference. These are of course just a data point, but this card sells very often, and so is probably a fair indicator of how the different grades are valued relatively. Wouldn’t pay a ton of attention to actual numbers/ratios here, again just one example over the past couple months.

Anecdotally, I’ve noticed that the difference between a PSA 10 and a CGC pristine is less pronounced for modern than it is for vintage.

Beckett Black Label: $2280

CGC Perfect 10:$690

Beckett Gold Label 10: $330

CGC Pristine 10:~$250 (about the same for new pristine and old pristine label)

PSA 10: $230

CGC 10: $160

this helps the gauging alot. thanks for going through the trouble. it kinda makes the perfect 10 a sought after from how i see it. thats like another niche

I think more people see the perfect 10 as an obsolete grade as much as anything. There aren’t a lot out there, so has some scarcity going for it, but there are other factors going against it, like you can’t really complete sets, not as sexy as a black label, and it’s harder for social media pumpers to build a position, so they’re less likely to feature them on posts to pump them up.

I own a handful for cards I like, I think they’re cool.

cgc pristine 10s are the equivalent of gold label 10. They are awarded more often but tbh a lot more people grade with cgc so its expected. I think they are grading 8x-10x as many pokemon cards as beckett on a monthly basis

with that said, looking at pop reports a Pristine ten is harder to get than a psa10 and highly desirable

For modern cards, there is a small but notable price difference between pristine 10 and psa10. Typically I see 0-30%
Really depends on the set though. For example many japanese modern cards are perfect and the premium between the two can be minor

If its vintage though, the premium can be quite large. This is in large part PSA’s fault because there are a ton of old certs that carry a ten label and are a full step in quality bellow the pristine. Going back 10+ years psa was a pretty easy grader so far too many undeserving cards carry a 10 label. CGC pristine also has a strict centering guideline which is harsher than psa

I believe the first pristine 10 charizard sold for something like 500k which was significantly more than psa10 at the time. Another example, I saw alakazam base set go 50% above the psa10 price recently. so the vintage and hard to grade premium can be very high sometimes

Would you guys in general prefer cgc 10 pristine or bgs 10 pristine for vintage or rate them about the same?

I’ve generally liked bgs because they were pretty strict for Japanese vintage but feels like cgc is a better run company of the two and clearly getting more momentum at least grading volume wise? I think their slabs look better too

I prefer the CGC10 because that is the highest grade.

1000% BGS. It’s much more strict in my opinion.

Why do you think bgs 10 trades at a premium to cgc 10p for vintage - I’ve always found this dynamic interesting

I view CGC 10 as budget black labels now.
BGS 10 black labels are the peak in collection

Honestly I think it’s just time in the market. BGS been around 20+ years vs CGC black label (current iteration) only two years. Generally speaking also BGS 10 are really clean cards so clean cards + time in the market = stonk

With both BGS 10 and CGC 10 Pristine grades in vintage specifically, the numbers tend to be very low on any given card. Most people want PSA 10s to begin with, so the market is pretty small. In the event I was even given a choice between each, I’d probably lean BGS only because I already have mainly PSA & BGS cards in my graded collection for both Pokemon & MTG.

But, given that CGC does seem more popular in Pokemon I don’t know if I’d ever have a choice to make between a BGS & CGC slab in this particular grade. I may just have to settle with whatever I could get between each company at that point.

yeah if I had to choose personally I think I’d go with cgc 10 pristine for the following reasons

  1. the highest grade cgc offers
  2. bgs 9.5 may eventually become bgs 10s, which would hurt pristine’s value imo
  3. between the two companies, cgc seems to be better poised to do well + grow, where as bgs is shrinking

another question for the group (sorry I’m new)

BGS 9.5 vs CGC 10 which do you prefer? Personally if its a Quad or Quad+, I like BGS but anything below I’ll go with CGC 10 – feels like slightly better resale value because its a whole 10.
