Big “collectors” are propagading PSA and making any CGC question instantly about how terrible the label is and not giving CGC a fair chance. Real/other collectors see that the big boys don’t speak well about CGC and decide not to take the service because of FOMO.
In the end what should matter is that the cards are collected and protected. If that’s in a PSA, CGC or BGS case, that should matter at all if you’re a true collector. Siding with just PSA just tells you’re more worried about securing assets than collecting that one card you miss in your collection.
Also just as an aside, do people see CGC as threat because they are harsher graders than PSA? (A CGC10 might be worth more than a PSA10? A PSA10 might be a CGC 9-9.5 in a lot of cases?) I am just mentioning what I see as a potential elephant in the room. I only own PSA cards so I have no incentive to undermine PSA.
I have put my last two submissions through CGC. My experience has been that CGC is more harsh that PSA overall. CGC cards also do not get any premium over PSA, but in fact get valued as a lesser product.
I decided to grade with CGC for the following reasons:
Although I’m losing out twice due to receiving a lower grade and not hitting a PSA premium, I valued the speed of the grading service. I feel that the market right now is so fast paced and losing access to my cards for 6 months+ could be a huge downside on my flexibility.
I didn’t like how PSA’s scaling premiums service could eat into my card values, especially on more expensive cards.
Given the above, for my specific circumstance, I chose CGC. This is not to say that CGC is better. I think both have positives and negatives about their service.
That being said… the findings of E4 staff is deeply disturbing and I am really disappointed that those people ruined something that initially could have been a great alternative to PSA.
Please be aware that this thread is not the appropriate one to discuss the CGC incident with E4. As that matter is now closed and the thread is still readable.
Please keep this thread to be about CGC grading itself, their prices, specials, returns or whatever.
What annoys me about CGC grading is that they don’t do international insurance. So if the plane somehow crashes along with my graded sub, CGC is not liable.
This got me thinking, can the Ludkins US be used worldwide? Ludkins UK doesn’t offer CGC grading yet unfortunately, but I might consider sending some cards to Ludkins US since I have good experience with Ludkins, and it’s probably cheaper than sending just a couple of cards directly to CGC.
So I sent in my first CGC sub, and I will say I am so far liking it. It was logged in same day it was received which is reassuring. I think next they bill me or something and then it gets scheduled for grading I think?
Can we than please forbid any member of making any comment in line of “the blue label is ugly” so we actually can progress into the discussion and the future of CGC, and what effect it will have on prices overall?
Received my first batch of CGC cards today. I’ll open later this week, but already saw the grades. Some tough grading. Nothing completely crazy but man I could have sworn the centering on a couple of those was perfect. I guess their pew pew pew lasers are better than my eyes at detecting centering issues which makes sense. We will see. The batch I got back have subgrades so I’ll get to really analyze them.
On the bright side, exactly 30 days from the day they received them. However batch number two with no subgrades is still over there. I suspect they will be sent soon. But they will be there for over 30.
Also very small sample sizes to make a real yay or nay determination in my opinion. 7 cards subgraded and 7 without. I didn’t want to go to crazy sending 50+ cards.
Their centering parameters are kinda nutty from what I can tell. Open search “CGC 10 pokemon” on ebay and see listing after listing of 9.5 centering and 10s across the rest
I think the harshness on centering really comes from the comic books, but it’s a good thing they don’t just slam a 9 or 10 on anything that just came from a booster pack.
Definitely seems higher graded cgc cards are a good indicator of quality cards but the market hasn’t quite caught on yet. Psa 9 cgc crystal celebi sold for a little under 900 while psa 9 sold for about 1.8k recently. I bet itll be like becket, but with stronger 9s.
