CGC Grading

Interesting that they decided to focus on MTG as their launch focus instead of Pokemon. I imagine that the Pokemon cards graded is much higher than the amount of MTG cards graded.

Lets not pretend there aren’t MANY examples of the same shit in PSA and Beckett and that this isnt likely an outlier for CGC, just like it is with PSA and Beckett, rather than the norm. Shit they haven’t even launched yet and people tryin to dismiss them.

That’s what I’m saying lol People are plenty happy to have a sloppy PSA 10 in their collection cause it says the words psa and 10 but when a company that routinely authenticates and grades 6 and 7 figure comics and coins wants to get in the business suddenly they are “junk” and “have no idea” lol Let’s see how it goes people

I mean, the issue here is not that CGC screwed up one grade, it’s that a representative from the company seems to have confirmed that they will be more lenient on corners and that this 9.5 is in fact representative of their standard. That’s something nobody asked for and was the point of my post…but we’ll see for real whether this is the case when more CGC graded cards come out.

i agree with many here. it’ll be a long road for the CGC in this hobby to make any headway.
however, if they are able to provide a better grading experience (better turnaround times, consistency, guarantees on their grades, etc.) and just stick around for the next 10 years, we might see things turn around. this is a huge IF though, but it isn’t impossible. PSA is not untouchable.

i still think BGS slabs are the best looking of the 3. but i am very happy to see another serious contender enter the market. hope this will whip PSA into shape.

BGS slabs look cool but they’re so damn bulky. The CGC prototypes look beautiful, the holo labels and stamp is a nice touch. They’ve been in the collectable industry grading 6-7 figure items for a long time so it’s not like they’re coming out of nowhere. To be honest, considering there was recently a class action lawsuit against PSA over the grading of a few shady flipper’s altered baseball cards that were being laundered out into the wild via PWCC, as well as the poor turnarounds from both Beckett and PSA, it’s the perfect entry time for a competator.

As a comic collector: this is amazing news!

The signature series aspect and grader notes (huge huge huge addition) would surpass PSA by tenfold! But what many people don’t realise is that CGC has delved into trading cards before (having a card grading company) - even if ever so briefly.

IMAGINE IF THEY FINALLY RECOGNISE BASE 2000!!

Fwiw people talking about that royal assassin corner, you can find BGS 9.5s that have corners like that for alpha cards all day, they’re usually a 9 subgrade though but still a 9.5 overall grade.

theyd be smart to grade packs or boxes to differentiate themselves

Be wary of people who are financially invested in PSA and BGS telling you that a new service is dead in the water before it even launches. Competition is good, and PSA/BGS has been slipping in their complacency.

Pricing, turnaround times

Nintendo was king in video games in the 80’s-90’s, then Sony took the crown and then, arguably as one person on CGC put it: Microsoft got it in the end. You’re right 100%: a lot of people who have an active investment bias will belittle this attempt by CGC (who have had a Carding Grading company in the past, mind you) ~

Ways for them to gain the upper hand on PSA and BGS:

  1. Grader notes
  2. Acknowledge Base 2000 (might see that happening a lot sooner and may be the kick PSA needs)
  3. A proper signature series, akin to the comics.
  4. The census (also accounting for signatures).
  5. Iconography on the label.

That’s… expensive. Good for them, but I’d rather go with psa and bgs

Imaging: Consists of accurate high-resolution images of the front and back of the card, shown encapsulated in its CGC Trading Cards holder. Applies to all cards on the form.

Interesting.

Pros:

  • Turnarounds
  • May grade cards PSA/Beckett don’t acknowledge
  • Looks like they have a flat fee for higher end items rather than boning you out of hundreds or thousands of dollars if you hit a Pristine Mint grade.
  • Acknowledge error cards likely with more consistency than PSA

Cons:

  • Pricing for bulk is higher than current industry leaders/standards which will price a lot of people out that might try them rather than PSA
  • Subgrades are an extra $5 per card making them higher than Beckett for smaller submissions.
  • You have to pay $5 extra per error card submission to have it acknowledged as an error.

They offer a lot of really cool bells and whistles extras but breaking into an established market while wanting more money for grading than either is gonna be a tough sell.

Congratulations to @funmonkey54 on the new position. Very encouraging to see that CGC is doing something which other grading companies have not and handing out the dough to someone who knows what they’re talking about. Hopefully having input from Charlie will lead to a much better Pokemon grading division!

As someone who has not sent cards in to grade before, are people calling their bulk price of $8 expensive? Or referring to other tiers? I see that PSA bulk is 9$ but remember hearing about some monthly special of $7.50 or so for last month?

I owe this thread an essay and I will provide that ASAP. Haha

It’s higher than PSA’s pokemon specials on bulk and it doesn’t appear to offer those subgrades unless you’re paying an additional $5 per card. So it would boil down to you liking the case more and thinking it’s worth the extra 50 cents per card, or just wanting to send in a bulk sub out of pokemon-specials season.

Expensive? It’s cheaper than PSA in every tier by a lot.

You can send an Illustrator in for $55 and have it back in 2 days. That would cost $5000 with PSA lol
