CGC Changed Their Grading Scale & Label

Hey mom, can we have PSA?

We have PSA at home.

I wonder why they removed half grades for 9.5 but not 8.5?

They will be fine because their comic grades are more than their card ones. They are basically the PSA of comic grading

Because then they remove half their grades given out!

Its good that I’ve only cracked CGC slabs.

@smpratte, yeah like right away I’m getting some GMA vibes off it. Maybe not quite this bad, but not too far off lol:

Lol that would be a lot of re-work

I think this was necessary to compete with PSA on a grander scale. Whether or not it works is to be determined. Having the two different companies was confusing and detrimental. I will have to see the label in person before I can comment because I never disliked the blue except for when it was on fire Pokemon, that was gross lol I own some CSG and the labels are fine.

The resell market has made it very clear in the past few years that 9.5s are not valued. This goes for cgc, bgs and sgc. I’m sure everyone here would agree 10 is king even if the card is identical to 9.5. Subs died because they were too expensive, not due to lack of demand (in my experience speaking with others).

Not sure how I feel about the new pristine 10 label but it is a huge improvement over the literal nothing they had before to differentiate.

My biggest frustration is the same as @qwachansey where all new additions to my collection will now have a different label and I’m not sure that I want to send some of my OG label with sub cards in for recase even if it means an upgrade to 10. They just waited too damn long to make the change lol

I have summarized the article in the OP. Basically, it looks like they want to compete with PSA and not BGS anymore. No more .5 grades (I misunderstood this) subgrades or 12 different grades above mint.

CGC 9.5s get a free upgrade to 10

The blue label has always been atrocious imo. This one is nicer. The pristine is a bit cheesy though.

I think this will ostracize a lot of their loyal consumer base. Seems like a constant pattern with CGC. But I do think it’s a strong and correct move for them if they want to actually take away a significant portion of PSA customers anytime in the future. This is similar to what BGS tried to do but didn’t have the courage to go through with

What I find pretty funny is how people bitched endlessly about how the blue label was too vibrant and now when CGC switches to a white label, people are bitching that it’s too bland .

Here’s my perspective as someone who (last I checked) was top 15 in the world on the CGC registry:

I prefer the new label, and I think it’s about damn time they switched to the PSA scale. And I don’t like subgrades, so that part is a-ok with me, too. So I actually love the change. The question is: how does this work in terms of getting stuff recased? If I have to pay $15 per card to get things recased, im going to be kind of annoyed, tbh.

The new grading scale isn’t clear, is only the 9.5 decimal being removed? They can’t get rid of the 8.5, that’s like ash getting rid of piakchu! :smirk:

$5 to recase until end of September

Ok, that’s not too bad, I guess. I would’ve preferred if they offered free recase, but I get that’s probably not economically feasible.

TBH, I don’t know anyone who really loved the blue label lol. I’ve been advocating for them to change the label color for the past 3 years on here. I’m happy they finally did it. I’m not sure that it will alienate people.

Haha fuck. I’ve submitted two times with CGC.
First time before they eased on grading.
Now second time right before they change the scales and label, again!
The lack of consistency sucks, but overall I understand the changes…

I hope they keep half grades besides 9.5. It would devalue 9s if they did not. Just like imo it kinda devalues 10s with removing 9.5

The strategic decision to rebrand and merge TCG and Sports cards is warranted. Changes to the label design supports this merge.

Personally, I am not the biggest fan of the label design but it’s still a significant improvement to the overwhelming blue label. In person, the new label does seem bland but it definitely does not distract or diminish the card, which is the ultimate goal of any graded slab. The CGC security holofoil in the top left corner is also a much needed update and aesthetically quite nice in person.

As for the adjustment to the grading parameters, if the data speaks to a diminished need for subgrades, then so be it. I personally like the subgrades so I can self assess my accuracy to company standards, but in reality, this was always simply a nice-to-have. Unless there’s a consistently growing, overwhelming demand for subgrades, CGC’s pivot makes sense, given their short grading history and their search to identify consistent grading parameters during the past few years.

I honestly don’t like the new one, it’s super bland. Blue was kinda distinctive and modern, I think they were building a niche.

It’s not the label change. If you are a CGC collector, you probably like the idea of subgrades and partial grades (gone). You probably liked that they were ā€œstricterā€ than PSA (but now all 9.5s are 10s). You probably liked your Perfects (which are now effectively downgraded to Pristine) and you probably don’t like that you have to resubmit every card you have at $5each. If you liked CGC before, they are virtually an entirely new company now.

From first impressions, I definitely prefer the blue label. That said, from the few CGC cards I do own, I will say that their slab has always been one that looks and feels much better in-hand, so I won’t judge too harshly for now.
