CGC Changed Their Grading Scale & Label

And to think I was excited for this announcement and the hype they were creating BIG WOMP

They’re upgrading all blue label 9.5s to 10s. And then they will grade cards in the future as 9.5s that will be ā€œmint+ā€ as opposed to ā€œgem mint.ā€

And no 9.5s have multiple 9 subgrades (unless they made a clerical error of some sort). You need three 9.5 subs to get a 9.5.

This update to CGC is just them trying to get out of their niche and attack the giant. To me there would not be any reason to grade with CGC anymore when PSA is just the same, but receives higher prices when you try to sell the slab. Gone with the niches and all hail the uniformity, what would be a reason to grade with cgc now?

This is my thought as well. Prior to these changes CGC was doing something different, so I get why someone would want to try a non psa option. Now its just feels like another PSA clone.

The same reason that existed before the change – better slab. No one was grading with them because of the blue label lol.

This is what seems to be the new grades:

Great graphic yes that’s it.

At this point there are many post 2020 collectors that only have CGC in their collection versus us older collectors that likely have PSA majority or a mix and those people will not suddenly move to PSA

For those complaining that the CGC label is too tall, well this is your alternative:
11 words are abbreviated. PSA labels are not tall enough. Why take up space with frosty plastic when it can focus more on the card and label?

The label change is not the reason I think this is a bad update. All of the other changes are. When everything that made CGC stand out just dissappears, there is little reason to grade with them.

Only the clearer slabs, I dont know how many people graded with CGC because of them, but I am guessing for most that would not be the biggest reason to grade with them.

Nobody can predict the future, but I am guessing that this would not have a positive outcome for CGC

So they implemented my suggestions from July 2020?

These are good ideas imo …three years ago. Making these changes now makes me question their intent. Awhile back I had an interesting glimpse into some non-public ways CGC conducts business that give me good reason to question the people that run the company. However, I still view them as the number one option for errors and cards that are otherwise mint but whose surface would be automatically deemed a <=6 by PSA.

the clear slabs is the only reason i graded with them. i like the size and clarity of their slabs

other benefits which made me go with them over another company:

  • reputable brand (like psa or bgs)
  • quick turnaround time for the price (unlike psa or bgs)

i don’t like psa or bgs labels or cases, so cgc was the only option for me and will probably still be. I don’t care about getting a perfect 10 or not unless i’m planning on selling the card.

I think these changes could be fine. I think its all just new and jarring and we need time to see how it plays out.

Is it possibile that now there are strong CGC 9s that are in fact 9,5 thanks to their new scale? Am I understanding this well?

Well, for me it’s literally the only reason why I grade with them over PSA. Because I otherwise prefer the white label and the PSA grading scale. So for someone like me, the change is pretty much perfect. And I don’t think I’m alone in feeling that way. I don’t think there was any other compelling reason to grade with CGC after PSA opened back up except for the case.

If both CGC and PSA both charge $15 per card, why would anyone NOT go to PSA?

For those who think this is just turning CGC into a PSA clone or making what was appealing about CGC go away, I’d urge you to consider the following:

  1. Do you actually think anyone was grading with CGC because they loved the blue label?
  2. Do you think anyone was grading with CGC because they loved the grading scale?

IMO, the answer to the above questions is no. After PSA reopened, the only compelling reason to continue using CGC was the superior case. And this new change doesn’t impact that reason at all. Basically, the idea that CGC is alienating significant numbers of people through this change is hilarious to me.

My only complaint is that it took them 3 fucking years to make this change.

Yeah there is some sort of weird gap now

I guess we will see how many people agree with you, I really dont have a good clue, it was just a gut instinct to say that that was not the biggest reason to grade with them. I am happy for you though. I am not affected by any of it, since I like to have my cards only in the soft plastics, but I hope there are more people like you for which this is a great change:)
