Binder VS Graded Cards

I prefer binders for everything. My MTG lands/Decks, my yugioh and DBZ (which isn’t special enough to get pro binders, and of course my PkMn. I do have graded cards, but I only buy a graded card because I want a graded card or think the investment is better. There are just a couple slabs that I actually wanted for fun, but everything else is purely for the value. I’d rather reduce the footprint of my collection because space is a premium.

I genuinely think that the people who are anti-binder have never flipped through a really good one or only care about flipping for a profit

True, and in the future for me, yes, but at the risk of assuming things about your priorities, when you’re trying to minimize rent cost in SoCal, and have a small apartment, you’d be surprised how quickly that shelf with 10 machops starts to matter. =) Scott’s grandma cabinets are about all the room I’ve got for card storage, haha.

One of my favorite binders is actually my Mtg Lands Dragonskin. I feel like it’s a tome, crafted from the hides of slain foes, with windows to other planes of existence. It also just has really cool art, so yea, 100% agreed.

For Pokemon, I collect both mint binder sets and PSA 10s – no reason you can’t do both. Collecting is all about the journey; it’s totally fine if it takes years to complete something – that’s the fun!

For MTG, I only collect binder sets, though. Grading MTG cards is so antithesis to what MTG is about: actually playing the game. I want to sleeve up cards like Nether Voids and Chains in a sweet mono black stax deck, not just have them sitting in oversized plastic cases lol. The only exception to this is my Unlimited Timetwister, which is not in a set and which I don’t want to play with (I hate having one white-bordered card in an otherwise black-bordered deck).

But overall, raw cards are where its at for MTG (unless you’re talking about mint Alpha or something). For Pokemon, both raw and graded cards are highly appealing to me.

Hello! As a representative of Binder Gang ™ I definitely have to chime in here!

The vast majority of my collection is raw/in a binder, and I love it! I’m a master set collector, and binders are perfect for this goal. I keep 1 binder per set so everything nice and organized. Binders make my collection feel like an encyclopedia, where I can flip through cards from any era anytime I want!

Want to collect a certain artist? Binder! Want to collect all variants of a certain Pokemon? Binder! Want to have a 360 or 480 copies of your favorite Pokemon card? Binder! Binders open you up to plenty of unique and fun goals w/ Pokemon cards! : D

Also, binders are more cost effective, allowing you to add more cards to your collection. Who doesn’t want more cards?

I do have a handful of graded cards in my collection. My slab collection has cards that were gifts, cards that I bought w/ friends on Discord, cards that I think are funny, and random cheap stuff I like. While I love my slabs, they don’t make me as happy as flipping through a binder.

I might update this post w/ more thoughts later! : D I hope you all have a great day!

I am just curious- how many people here have 3D Printers? Weird question for this topic but hear me out.

The biggest problem with Slabs is proper storage that is also easy to access.

Ultimately, something like a binder will win out the space race cause slabs are just ungodly big compared to a flat piece of cardboard.

However, with enough “resources” I think the Slab Game can still retain that ease of access with proper storage though definitely not for the average Joe. Essentially you would need a room to become the “binder” for the Slabs, much like a toy collection room. From there, with the use of 3D Printing, you can make your own way to display the Slabs in the room. I have some ideas but I am years away from doing something like this(namely the lack of graded cards to justify a whole room). But it’s coming

Slabs in display cases look the best! No need to flip or take them out, they are always there

That sounds amazing! And yes, building EDH decks and finding a card only has white-bordered releases…

NOOOoooooo!

There are people who make 3D-printed slab holders. IDK what you’re looking for exactly, but there may be creative designs out there.

Hahaha, luckily there are very few cards with only white-bordered releases – just some random P3K cards, I think. But yeah, I can’t deal with white-bordered cards unless the whole deck is white-bordered. It just bothers me so much lol.

For my lands collection, I actually sharpie the white borders black. >_< On the flipside, I’ve seen someone who has colored the judge guru lands white. :sob:

I am aware. But so far they are mostly your standard run of the mill slab stands.

I do have many creative ideas and I think once more people see what can be done, you’ll see alot more people having Slab Display Rooms much like you see with Toy Display Rooms.

It’s definitely gonna be interesting!

I am willing to be an ambassador for both slabs and binders so we can finally stop this senseless violence after decades of struggle :sob:

@nish,that Gold Star Mew has surprisingly good centering!

Are they notoriously bad?

Yup. If you consider the 1st Edition and the unlimited version as the overall PSA 10 pop of a Japanese Gold Star, Japanese GS Mew has the lowest PSA 10 pop count of all Japanese Gold Stars except for the Umbreon and Espeon, and that’s mostly due to the common off-centering
