Best card to buy at the $1000 mark?

When I looked up mine last month I was pretty surprised by the new valuations. $1k for unlimited mint and a little more for 1st ed., both ungraded. Not bad for foreign language. It seems that they’ll follow the path of Korean unlimited if availability continues to be absorbed into the collectordom.

It’s more that it comes off as someone saying ‘Hey I want to spend 1000 dollars on a card that will make me money on the future, go do the work for me and then tell me what to get’.

If that wasn’t your intention then no harm done, but at the moment there is an influx of people with that attitude and it can get annoying.

Shadowless PSA 9 blastoise

Could do the birds + the dogs in PSA 9 for less than $1k! Gorgeous cards.

  • Fire red charizard PSA 10, for a little over 1k you could try to pick up 2 (icon of the era imo)
  • Aquapolis lugia PSA 10 (one of the best artwork imo)
  • Blaine’s charizard PSA 10 1st
  • relatively low pop items in popular sets that have not jumped in price yet

If I had $1,000 to spend on anything without any current personal goals included, I’d say go on Japanese auction sites and pick up some no rarity symbol base set cards. They sell quite high on eBay but can be picked up relatively inexpensively in Japan. I’ve seen some minty-looking no rarity symbol Charizards sell in the past few months for around the 60,000 JPY mark (~$550) and in PSA 8 these are currently selling for as much as $1,500. PSA 9s sell for as high as $5,500.

With new Chinese cards coming out, and given China’s population, I wouldn’t be surprised if Chinese cards increase in price in the near future due to increased demand.

There is a Pokemon Art Academy card up on ebay now for $888. Only 100 ever released. That’s a pretty interesting card to obtain.

Or a PSA 9 Base 1st edition Venusaur. Can’t go wrong with the classics.

are you really trying to “invest” in a 1k pokemon card? do you think its gonna be worth a whopping 1500 5 years from now? theres a million other things to put your money in that will make you more $

I would say this is not necessarily going to be true. China’s market is quite different in terms of its history and exposure to Pokemon and the Pokemon release so far is only in Taiwan, maybe HK, which is a different market segment. I do believe this will help bring back some interest, but I guess we won’t know till we see some marketing trends develop in the next 12-24 months. If pokemon continues to pump new products, then I have better confidence - I imagine Pokemon would’ve done some market analysis if they decided to look into this market seriously for the first time 13 years. I guess one caveat is that since Pokemon is so small, even if we get 100 new serious collectors come into the Pokemon market, we could feel a price jump.

I would say subscribing and educating yourself (both directly from people in the hobby and general business/investment sense) is just as valuable as getting any cards at this moment with your disposable income of $1000. I don’t think soliciting for advice is inherently bad, but most people who know enough about the hobby would ask more direct questions and already have some idea of good/bad buys. an over-generalized ask usually paints a picture of someone who lacks general knowledge.

Now to help you get going on your research…
I would say buy MTG alpha rares - only 1,100 cards made of each artwork. Buy in whatever condition, just make sure it’s at or below market value. the MTG market is a bit more mature and usually with bigger buyers mixed in. do what big stores do - buy COLLECTIONS! You usually get a massive discount that way instead of purchasing individual cards. AND buy playable cards. i don’t know enough about the game to know which cards are playable.
Even getting the alpha uncommon cards - only 4,500 printed of each!!! Even though it’s labeled “uncommon”, this thing would be semi-god-tier rarity in Pokemon.
A close third in value would be MTG beta rares - only 3,200 of each.
Buy Pokemon sealed products, start with D&P.

If you know how to data mine sites, I would data mine this site and search for trending topics and that’ll paint you a nice, but concise picture of the last few years in pokemon. that might help with your prediction for the future.

I simply asked what is the best card to buy at 1k mark. I didnt say anything about i have 1k to invest etc. I should have phrased the thread better. What card would you buy if you only had 1k? 1 card, no more, no less. What would you buy?

What? Last few card I’ve bought and sold were at a 400% profit within 2 years. Much better than my share portfolio and property that i own.

While that’s true, you also should consider that the upper class is leaving mainland china in droves and leaving to the Traditional Chinese speaking countries like HK, Taiwan, Macao, etc., & also into other countries with more exposure to the Pokemon market.

what cards were those?

I like that Venu recommendation
