I was at a family dinner last weekend and my parents brought up Pokemon. They were curious as to how and why people collect them.
I explained people collect all types of trading cards and all types of things now a days.
After going over some value numbers on Sports / Pokemon trading cards they were really surprised that adults can put that much money into collectibles.
Later that night my family member brought out a huge bucket of Beanie Babies from the 90’s and asked if these were worth something.
Now i’ve seen ridiculous fake sold listings for 5 figures on some beanie babies but I was curious if ANY were worth ANYTHING anymore.
I remember as a kid in the 90’s everyone had beanie babies, whether they collected them or just had them to play with or to throw at family members.
So I did a little research and I think this video sums up pretty much exactly how the Beanie Baby market is today.
Nice post.
Even though I was collecting at the time, I was also in my mid 40s and had seen enough to know what collectibles had legs and which didn’t. I knew beanies didn’t. Why?
young to middle aged women were the target market
they were made in China
At the time if you put those two things together you could forget it. If you could hit the younger distaff market (ie: Barbie) then you might be OK.
I can proudly say, I never bought a single beanie baby until earlier this year when my daughter grabbed one in the store and wouldn’t let it go;) Maybe a new trend is starting after all lol.
I remember going through beanie babies a long time ago when my mother asked me to. From what I remember the one ones that hold any value have black and white sewn on tags (not the ty tags). If you find any of those do more research and you migh have some value in them.
I always wondered if mine was the original “punchers” as the whiskers on mine are different than all the pinchers I’ve seen. Either way it’s not worth much.
theres a lot of rereleases, if it doesn’t have the black and white tag it’s not going to be worth much. Basically the black and white tags were the originals before the hype, making them the rare versions. As for the value if you find one, you gotta do the research yourself.
