Base set starter poll

There’s so many good Charizard arts that I would not say base set is best. Hidden Fates GX, the 151 Ultra Rare, and Expediton Charizard 39 are all better than base set imo.

So I pick Blastoise, there aren’t nearly as many good arts, and the base set one nicely displays the full Pokemon large and centered.

I’ll even throw another heretical opinion in: Base Set 2 is better due to the superior cosmo holo pattern.

Did you purposely choose the wonky looking Charizards just to trigger me?!?
I almost had a heart attack when you said Expedition but then I remembered there was 2

I chose Charmander as a kid, I will always choose Charizard.

i always chose charmander in r/b/g/y. people said he was “hard mode” but i never got it as my lvl 12 charmander quickly beat brock and also misty after that.
charizard always owned as a part of my team with slash + dig + flamethrower+ strength/mega punch.

however in the TCG due to everyone overestimating charizard and many people talking charizard like there are no rarer or more wonderful cards, it really ruined it for me so i chose blastoise.

Charizard is actually my least favorite of the 3 because I don’t have any great memories of it

Before I ever got into the tcg, I played Gameboy Red and squirtle/blastoise was my first pokemon. It was a completely unbiased pick because when I made my choice, it was when I didn’t really know much about pokemon. I didn’t know charizard was everyones favorite. To me, out of the 3 starters, squirtle was the one I liked most.

Venusaur was my biggest pull from base set as a kid. I sort of knew it was a good pull so I remember putting it in a hard case and it was my “show-off” card lol. I did sadly trade it and I do remember sort of regretting making that trade. I traded it for some DBZ cards lol. I still have at least one of the DBZ cards from that trade

Yes.

But actually I just chose the ones with good body proportions and head/hands/belly ratios. I like standing up artworks where the Pokemon is front and center fully visible. Base set has him hunched over like a bridge troll.

a lot of dragons in media kinda do that when walking they keep their head and neck lower and hunched instead of standing on 2 legs erect like a human. I think they do this in LOTR and GoT a fair bit. Its about as dynamic an art that we could have asked for in base set when the rest are a big fat plop on a standard background

Not to sound too much like a fedora wearing redditor there

I just think the base zard card is actually a fantastic artwork and holds it’s own with modern zards

What kind of question is this?!

Charizard was my first starter in Red, and the Base Set card is one of the most nostalgic things of my childhood.

Blastoise holds a big chunk of nostalgia for being a beast of a card and having probably the coolest design of the lot.

But then Venusaur is the most fun to actually play through a game with, and feels like the “I’m so good, I don’t need to brag about it” member of the starter trio.

… Begrudgingly going with Charizard because the thread title specifically says Base Set as the metric, and the big lizard is the only one that isn’t just stock art.

I have distinct memories playing GB and wrecking entire lineups with Blastoise and not even needing to sub another pokemon :turtle:

I’m not a Stephen A fan but he let us know his pick today on ESPN.

Venusaur always gets the short end of the stick haha…as a kid I always picked Charmander…but not as an adult, I’d go Blastoise. Loved the artwork of both Charizard and Blastoise when I was a kid that its so nostalgic now.

I go for the one-horned zard0

Yes but bulba is great
