Charlie aka Ludkins? I get that the math adds up and you make more per box selling 36 packs at almost $3k apiece, but they don’t think they could sell it sealed for $80k? I think they’re gonna have a hard time filling 36 slots at $3k apiece. For that price, it’s Charizard, Venusaur, or Blastoise in PSA 10 or bust!
a sealed box hasnt sold close to 80k+ for over a year.
More recently theyve been selling for 50k + auction fees.
Theyll fill this (most likely), however there’ll come a time with market saturation where people will stop, think and realise buying unweighed packs is a lose making exercise. Until then milk it like a miltank.
I don’t think they’ll have an issue tbh…there are enough people out there like Juice and Anthony and others that buy packs from TCA and others for way above market value just for the thrill
I don’t know whats up with 1st ed base boxes right now. They are selling for frankly astonishingly low amounts, just as they were back when TCA opened one up because it was better value to crack and grade the cards. Now it’s better value to crack and sell the packs.
I can understand Skyridge boxes selling for $16k and 1st Neo Destiny not far behind if boxes are unique collectable items with no relation to the value of the cards inside. But we don’t see that with 1st ed base somehow. There’s a discontinuity in the market here, whether it means sealed boxes are due for a correction or 1st ed base is undervalued is yet to be seen. But there’s opportunity here for someone who makes the right call. I know what I’d do though.
There are 2 very obvious reasons that 1st ed Base boxes are selling for less than the sum of their parts (the individual packs) right now:
1 - A single pack is within the price range that many collectors can afford as part of their disposable income while the price of a sealed box is out of reach for many collectors.
2 - People have been spooked by all the reports of fake 1st ed Base boxes being sold.
Clearly, if the goal is to cash-in *right now* breaking up the boxes and selling the packs individually is the way to go.
Of course, in the long-run something will have to give - if packs continue to be sold and a portion of them continue to be opened, the supply of sealed 1st ed Base product will continue to decline, pushing prices upward.
The other thing about keeping boxes sealed is that you would always have the opportunity to break them up anyway, but you’ll never get an opportunity to put them back together once opened.
But there’s nothing wrong with people thinking they have held their investment for long enough and cashing out now by breaking up the boxes.
And yes @fourthstartcg , I believe 1st ed Base boxes right now will provide a superior ROI compared to 1st ed Neo boxes / e-Reader boxes in the long-run.
