Question, how do you guys feel about artists (painters, etc) doing art on the Pokémon card themselves? Some sell for hundreds to thousands depending on the art itself and the artist (including the card itself), although most of them seem to be drawn on certain energy cards, etc. probably so that the value of the card dramatically goes up.
Wouldn’t make too much sense doing art on an expensive card unless the artist themselves over values the card itself. How do you guys see these cards as far as pokemon collecting? Some are also slabbed &/or graded by CGC & PSA. Most of them signed by the artist. I thought of getting one done for myself by an artist I like.
Some of them look pretty cool. I’d be very careful paying a lot of money during a boom because nobody knows if this sort of thing will hold value long term but if it brings you joy then go for it.
Alters are supposed to be pretty cheap unless they’re completed with incredible detail. In my opinion, Pokemon alters are dramatically overpriced for what they are (e.g., generic recreations of desirable Pokemon art using a limited palette with some detail, typically a few square inches in size).
It’s also important to remember that Pokecolor is commissioning and selling alters as an actual arm of their business in China, so consider the possibility of a nearly unlimited supply and artistic duplication.
I won’t yuck anyone’s yum here, they can be very cool. You should spend money however you see fit, and not let your decisions be influenced by what strangers on the internet say.
That being said, the majority - definitely not all - are uninspired, copy-pasted artwork from existing cards. I suggest looking at Klug alter’s work for what I would like to see from these artists (for the prices they charge). Actual miniature artworks using cards as canvas. Here some side by side examples:
