Some stories:
Birthday Pikachu - Bought this for 50 dollars off of Facebook marketplace. Met a random person in my university’s parking lot after dark. He threw in a lot of unlimited base set holos that were unfortunately in pretty bad condition, but the Pikachu was very good! He said he obtained it himself back in the day from entering the contest.
Gold Star Mew - Another college story. Was given several tins by a college friend who collected during the ex era. Was told to “pick what I wanted out of there and donate the rest to charity,” and so I rushed back to my dorm after class. (Yes, I carried around 5 tins to my evening class.) I had a small hope there would be a gold star in there… and there was. My favorite one, Mew! It’s heavily played/damaged, but it holds a special place in my heart and still looks amazing in my binder. A lot of the other cards in the tins were of similar condition and I couldn’t sell them to the LGS and donate the money. I still have most of them and am just waiting for a good opportunity to pass them on to a younger fan.
JPN Red’s Pikachu, Lillie’s Clefairy, Scream Eevee promos - Not an exciting story. Bought off of eBay when they were dirt cheap. Very happy, especially with the Eevee, as there would be no way I would be able to get that card now.
HGSS Promo Shiny Raikou - Got in a tin from my late grandfather for Christmas when they first came out. He did not really “get” my obsession with Pokemon, but tried to understand as best he could anyways. I can just imagine him asking the Wal-Mart employee where the Pokemon cards were and then going over each and every type of pack with the employee to “find the best one for his granddaughter.” That’s the way he always bought things he didn’t know too much about. In his mind he was probably just buying me a Christmas present, but I saw it as a heartfelt gesture and it will always remind me of him.
Non-holo Unlimited Dark Charizard - Found this the other night while retooling my binder. It was hidden behind the sleeve with Expedition Non-Holo Ampharos. Not a huge Charizard fan, but the art on this card is very cool.
One may notice I have a lot of full art trainer cards! Yes, I do! Despite how one-note characters can be in Pokemon, I really enjoy them. Kieran is probably my favorite as of right now. I still need to get my hands on his other FA…
Most other cards were picked up at the LGS. I have very little of my original cards left as a most of them have water damage or were just in very poor condition from being brought everywhere. I’ve also given away a lot of cards over the years. Nothing too crazy thankfully, but some of those choices sting a bit…
