I don’t think it is applicable to me. The stuff I’m chasing is often outside the norm; IE vintage English and Japanese, World Championships stamped cards, Japanese sets that never got printed in English.
I don’t mind chasing and opening modern product. But it isn’t my focus or biggest passion within the hobby.
I prefer yellow borders and Japanese vintage although I have a huge modern collection. The silver borders do not hit the same. I also enjoy how it is easier to read the vintage cards because full arts were not present, since recently. So I guess I have tendencies for both directions.
I think I don’t really know what should be considered a normie in regards of Pokémon cards collecting. At least not for ptcg collecting in general.
I think we all have our little knacks what makes each collector special in their own right.
Maybe something else to consider here is there might be “normies” in certain categories depending in which era one started to collect. For example I think a lot of people who are collecting since the OG era have similar interests and likes compared to someone who started for example with the SV era.
I feel like I’m a normie because I like gengar, chorizord and umbreon and the og games but I also collect and own some pretty obscure stuff in the hobby and pretty much solely try to add that kind of thing to my collection.
I came back to this hobby this year after a long break. I am not sure if i am a normie since i don’t really chase new sets. I just buy what i like. Maybe i liked the art or the scarcity of that specific card. What i do know is that from what i’ve bought so far most are dragon type pokemon. I do think that my favorite pokemon make me a normie since they are popular.
I’d define a normie as someone who has basic knowledge of the hobby, randomly buys modern products from stores and opens them to fill a binder with those cards, occasionally buys rare modern chase cards on ebay…
So I’m pretty much the opposite, I never open sealed products, I prefer vintage and obscure cards and care very little about whatever new special secret illustration alt art rare cards that Youtubers are hyping up. I do however enjoy vintage remakes like the 25th Anniversary and classic collection ones
