I visit this forum and multiple Pokémon Discord groups almost every day, and skim over every new post
I’ve watched every single Pokémon anime episode; movie; and special episode
I collect the TCG cards in all 16 languages
I have the third largest Pikachu TCG collection in the world (a.f.a.i.k.), and even used to be no. 1 in the world in 2018; I currently own ALL English Pikachu TCG cards
I also collect everything non-TCG if it features a Seviper, my favorite Pokémon, even if you need a loop to see it’s there
I’ve written multiple articles, and people often come to me for questions for all kind of Pokémon-related subjects
etc. etc.
So no, I don’t have any Pokémon obsessions that I can think of tbh.
I’ve always collected Pokémon stuff, jumping from one obsession to another. I used to collect every event Pokémon distributed in the main games (I have a huge collection of very rare Pokémon that were released worldwide). Then I ended up with one of the top Pokémon GO collections and spent a ridiculous amount of money buying Pokémon on GO And now… TCG
My first Game Boy and Pokémon game are in a safe at my bank, even though they’re not worth anything. I’m just terrified they might get stolen because I care about them so much.
Tom is the one who surpassed me in 2019. And Miguel mostly surpassed me because he still collects all languages for new sets, and I stopped on the 25th Pokémon Day (Feb. 27th, 2021).
I’d say I’m pretty impulsive, so I’m not even sure what kind of collector I really am. I just see a card I like and will do everything I can to get it. My ADHD definitely plays a role too it makes me hyper focus on finding “the perfect” raw copy, which is almost impossible with some cards because of their age or scarcity. I also have this obsession with finding good deals and spend a ton of time inspecting every tiny imperfection on cards I buy. Recently I’ve accepted that finding a raw copy of the card i want in true mint condition is impossible, so I’ve shifted my focus to trying to get a PSA 10 instead.
I’d say I’m a pretty laid-back collector and only buy things if I can personally justify the price.
• Back in 2016–17 I had the chance to buy out multiple Gold Star collections where each card was averaging around $90. My young self thought that price was absolute BS and instead went after commons/uncommons to complete master sets. Now in 2025, I wish I could time-travel and smack myself in the head.
• Same regret goes for several cards still missing in my complete binder sets.
• Around November 2024, I saw a PSA 9 Crystal Lugia for ~$3,400 and thought it was insane… until I saw where the market is now.
• In January 2024 I almost bought a PSA 10 Karen’s Tyranitar for $210, but I noticed a PSA 9 was going for $110. I took the “smart” route and got the 9 instead (also avoided import tax — Korea taxes Japan imports over $150). A few days ago? Yeah, I bought the PSA 10 for $650.
• One time I got so obsessed with Cynthia cards that I bought every PSA 10 I could find in Korea (mostly Korean prints). Then it hit me… I had submitted the exact same cards to PSA two months prior. Every single one came back a 10.
• As far as I know, I’m the only vintage collector in Korea with an (almost) complete vintage-to-EX era collection.
• I heavily despise cards with a terrible distribution history (Van Gogh Pikachu, Japanese McDonalds Pikachu, Korean Ditto promo, etc.).
• Once in 2016 I had the chance to be “that guy” and clear out the Tohoku Pokémon Center shelves of Mario Pikachu boxes — they had no limits back then and I was literally the only customer. But the “nice” me said, “Nah, Mario Pikachu isn’t my thing,” and instead bought 17 boxes of Rage of the Broken Heavens (XY Breakpoint)… and pulled absolutely nothing.
Jokes aside, collecting Pokémon is one of the things that keeps me motivated these days. My wife also enjoys ripping packs with me and loves all the cute artwork, so it’s something fun we share together.
