I’m curious if this has ever happened? If so, did it ever work? Were there any failed attempts we know of? Calling on anyone with historical knowledge here ![]()
You mean like Kabuto king? Or Van Gogh Pika? Or did you mean something else?
This guy does vintage Dragonite PSA 10 / CGC Pristine buy-outs.
all the time.
I remember hearing that someone owned quite a significant proportion of the pop of Neo Gen 1st edition Lugia 10s. But this was quite a few years back so they may well have sold by now.
You’re probably thinking of betapoketrader, they also had multiple PSA 10 Pichus.
@Dizzle … I know you didn’t do it on purpose but… 204/xy-p ![]()
Dedenne collectors man. Ruthless ![]()
kingpokemon graded 76 out of the 120ish base first ed charizards PSA10s. No idea how many he kept but pretty wild to think about the influence he had/has over the market of such an iconic card.
I remember our best friend in moms basement Rudy saying: “People really have no idea of how many cards are in existent, you cannot corner a market unless you know exact print numbers”.
there are certainly people online that showcase collecting as many as possible of a certain card. in general, i don’t think it’s an inherent problem because there’s so many cards for each at large, but the loudest in the room feel a bit performative with predictable goals with ratings, clout, or money’d ends.
i collect a certain card too but it’s more of an addiction i try to control. advertising it seems counterintuitive if i want to keep costs down. won’t sell them and doubt it’ll ever explode in popularity anyway.
its clear that you dont need to actually corner a market, you just need people to think you have
How many do you have? One printing or various?
I thought “cornering the market” only had a single definition. Just in case there are multiple definitions I’ll post one below for your reference:
Cornering the market involves acquiring a dominant, often majority, share of a specific commodity, security, or asset to control its price and create an artificial monopoly. This manipulative strategy allows the entity to restrict supply, driving prices higher for profit. It is generally considered an illegal, anti-competitive practice.
Yeah that’s what i figured. You just put it in quotes so I did know if you meant something different lol
I think when people try I think they’re like “I have 5,000 copies of this ONE CARD!” When there are 100,000 copies of it so it really doesn’t make a big difference at all. So to me it seems more like a marketing strategy to whatever thing they’re trying to do rather than actually having significant control over one item.
about 80 of one printing.
I know a guy on Instagram who has around 30 copies of Palkia Lv X PSA 9. But it seems like genuine love for the card, he’s never really tried to leverage it to profit
why buy 90 9s instead of a couple 10s though ![]()
Personally I prefer having multiple copies of a lower grade compared to one 10. I don’t go as far as 30 copies but I’ve got a few Rayquaza Gold Star 9s, a few Charizard Gold Star 9s, multiple copies of my favourite ex’s in PSA 9. I get more enjoyment out of looking at multiple cards, each has their own unique look, holo pattern, etc. Having 1 fewer white dot on the back doesn’t make a PSA 10 worth it to me
Because 9s are just 10s for half the price when the grader is having a bad day
