Prepare yourself for a 200+ post thread on this topic
200+ before the announcement
This is also total cards which includes other TCGs that cgc doesnt report out yet AND sports cards. The picture looks less grim if CGC / CSG finally got their pop report stuff together.
I was not aware CGC had pop report issues. Can someone fill me in
I agree fully. CGC/CSG are doing well.
Right now, they grade a wide breadth of TCGs but only report the large players like magic and pokemon. Weiss is left out as well as others. and for csg gemrate has claimed pop report staleness since Feb due to maintenance.
These numbers are pretty irrelevant for Pokemon comparisons, though. Of those 237.9k cards added to the PSA pop report last week, only 91k were Pokemon (38%). Whereas of the 16.7k cards added to the CGC pop report last week, 16k were Pokemon (96%). So the actual relevant comparison is 91k vs 16k. Still a large gap, of course, but less than half the size of the gap than that graphic implies.
I don’t know the exact BGS numbers, but I’d expect the spread to be even larger with BGS.
We can all make almost any point we want with statistics. The big question is which of the 3 below psa will break out from the pack.
I’m not making a “point” with statistics. I’m pointing out that the Gemrate statistics aren’t very helpful for comparing the # of Pokemon cards graded.
Ah ok thats pretty nuts they have little to no presence in sports. I wonder if that is part of the reason for the update.
It’s been 3 years for CGC Trading Cards and over 20 years for BGS. What makes you think that the future will be any different? Pending something crazy, I don’t see the market share equitably splitting in the near future.
Ok you are making a point about statistics if that’s better.
Well, the implication was that I was manipulating statistics to make a point that was misleading. Whereas in actuality, I was literally just comparing the # of Pokemon cards graded by one company to the # of Pokemon cards graded by another. It wasn’t even a point about statistics lol. It was literally just a comparison of two numbers.
Regardless, as to your original point: nothing’s changed regarding the dynamics of the the graded Pokemon card scene. PSA is by far #1, CGC is a distant #2, and the rest is pretty much statistical noise. This is at least true for the sets I pay attention to, For example:
Sandstorm pop report:
PSA - 13.7k
CGC - 6.8k
BGS - 0.3k
The gap is a little less insane for WotC, but still pretty crazy:
1ED Neo Genesis:
PSA - 54.5k
CGC - 19.6k
BGS - 3.5k
Every dog has it’s day.
I agree we can only look at like for like to get any sense. We don’t compare cgc comics with psa now do we lol.
I like to think I was responsible for that bgs sandstorm footnote
PSA shutting down was CGC’s grand opportunity to acquire market share. It worked somewhat, but I think that type of black swan event is unlikely to come around again. I find it hard to believe that CGC will dramatically increase market share under current circumstances.
Obviously i’m a CGC fanboy. but, i think they have a foothold in the market when it comes to personal collections. their registry has grown significantly in the past year (obviously not the same as the PSA registry OGs). Cgc 10s have also caught up to Psa 10s recently in terms of price (just look at probstein’s latest set of auctions in the last two weeks)
I’m just really glad we have another player and some competition regardless of the slab.
Unless this announcement is that they have graded a Perfect 10 GB Meowth #10 promo I can’t imagine what they have to announce that would interest me.
What’s a dramatic increase? 50 percent higher? 100 percent higher? I’d be aiming for 100 percent higher over the next 3 years. Minimum 50 percent. Offices in Europe that grade on site would be my aim.
