Anyone else NOT excited for Sword/Shield?

Wow, that’s the most fanboyish thing I’ve read on here.

Yeah, it’s totally not about money, they just want to teach us patience.

It’ll be a good game, but we need to start a petition or something for gamefreak to lose their hold over the pokemon license. They clearly care about Town much more than pokemon at this point. In most cases, it would be fine, but this is Pokemon. I mean this franchise generates too much revenue to only be an above average title, especially for its first main console release

I really want to get it day one, but with work and the ever growing back log of games, I need to catch up first

Excited is definitely not the word I would use, I was excited for gen 2 and gen 3. Now I am just kind of interested what direction pokemon will go to and what it will mean for for the cards as a collector.

If you’ve read/seen the reviews of LTH, then you’d know that they clearly didn’t give it all the effort people are claiming.

It’s a shit fight of a game, and lacks all of the passion a main series Pokémon game usually has.

The negative vibe of this thread makes me sad

I get that, but all opinions here are voiced by people who’ve been around the Pokémon franchise for a while.

If this is going to be your first Pokémon game, you’re going to have a great time regardless. But for people who’ve experienced Pokémon games already, the changes for this installment are pretty big. This will divide the existing playerbase because everybody is playing for different reasons and expecting different things from the sequels.

You can’t please everybody and I’m sure the new games will do just fine.

I’ve been there trough every single Pokemon generation so my opinion is also from someone who’s been in the franchise for a while…

I get why people are critical and all that but I want to experience the games before I actually start judging. I dislike how salty the community is about everything…

We have seen very little about the games so far overall. Actually, surprisingly little. I feel like before Sun & Moon we had much more information available before release. That’s why it’s even harder for me to judge before experiencing it or seeing more. My number one favorite Pokemon isn’t even going to be available in the games but I still want to experience what it has to offer.

@xzini, you’ve got a point. Practically nobody has played the game yet.

But what little they did show wasn’t exactly stellar:

  • Fair or not, graphically these new Pokémon games are going to be compared to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild; a game released over two and half years ago.

  • Gameplay wise, the transition from 3DS to Switch could be massive. But so far, they haven’t shown anything the 3DS couldn’t handle. Battling big Pokémon with multiple people? We’ve had Monster Hunter on the 3DS for years.

  • Good, new Pokémon designs, variations on the old ones, etc. That’s a big plus, but we were getting new Pokémon in every new installment, without having to say goodbye to the old ones.

Pokémon as a franchise is so, so, so huge, expectations couldn’t have been higher for such a step up in the main game series. And yet, it feels like a run-of-the-mill sequel. I just can’t help but think that the developer was getting too complacent and took some shortcuts, expecting fans to buy it anyway. And let’s be honest, even the worst Pokémon up 'till now is considered a good game and a massive financial success. These new ones aren’t going to change that.

I also feel that all opinions in this thread are expressed because everybody cares. We all want Pokémon to do well, because we all share that love for the franchise. I guess people are salty because a game in the biggest franchise, developed by a company with so many years of experience feels watered down and not up to par with other games/franchises.

But yes, we’ll have to play before we can truly judge it.

Hot take: Without implementing a Pokemon filter in games from now on, they will become even more stagnant than they already are

Why though? I like how they did it in B&W.

What do you mean?

Today there are close to 1000 pokemon, when Pokemon gets as old as Star Wars, we will be approaching multiple thousands if they keep the historic rate.

You cannot flesh out 2000 characters. If you want 2000 characters in a game, you will either have to accept that the quality per character will be low or that resources that would otherwise be going to more critical parts of the game design will have to be sacrificed.

Whether you think Game Freak has appropriately used the freed resources by limiting the pokemon in the game is totally up for debate but that’s not what I’m arguing.

My point is the total number of pokemon only goes up, as does the cost of large-scale game development over time. Something has to give.

Every member of this forum who collects Pokemon cards should be EXCITED about a new game releasing on a main console. This is just creating a whole new generation of pokemon lovers, getting parents back into pokemon with their kids and maybe into nostalgic cards, and it means Pokemon will be relevant for another 20+ years. Anytime a new game is released everyone on here who collects should be excited because a new game is great for the sustainability of the hobby that you love. If that prospect doesn’t excite you, at least a little, then idk what to tell you. Maybe try to smile more often? haha

Now whether or not you are a fan of the game or enjoy playing it, that’s another thing. I for one think it’s going to be the greatest pokemon game ever and really am looking forward to playing it. I don’t need to compare it to Zelda or Mario because its not Zelda or Mario, its pokemon and it looks better than any pokemon on the DS or gameboy or whatever. Too much “it could be like this” or “if only it was as good as this” and not enough just appreciation for what it actually is and the idea of growing this hobby and seeing a new region. Maybe I’m too old school in my thinking. Who knows.

Nothing will match the first Pokemon game we owned/the first one we put significant time into. It’s a well known fact.

Pearl will always be my all time favorite just because of the fact that my friends and I would always play it after our basketball practices while waiting for our parents to pick us up lol. The initial days of pokemon go were great because everyone got back into the game just like the good ole days :relieved:
