Anyone else have bad experiences with Collector's Cache?

So I’m kind of annoyed and I’m just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience to me. So I ordered ~10 different NM cards from Collector’s Cache via TCGPlayer. 8 of the 10 are acceptable, but 2 are damaged (one has actual water damage and one has a crease). Not a big deal, mistakes happen, and it was only $6 in cards. Still, because I believe in accountability, I messaged them and very kindly told them that two of the cards they sent me weren’t NM.

They told to me send them pics, which I did. Then they tell me that they can’t offer a partial refund because, quote:Checking the prices of these two cards against the market it looks like you got them at about half price, incredible deal!” Even if this were true, it would be terrible business practice. When a seller sells someone something, the seller enters into a contractual relationship with the buyer to deliver that to item to the buyer. Even if the item, in the interim, increases in market value, that should have zero bearing on the original contract and the fact that one party failed to uphold its end of it.

But what makes me even more annoyed about this is that Collector’s Cache still, as of my writing this, has copies of the exact same cards I purchased, in the exact same condition I purchased mine in, for the exact same price. So clearly I didn’t get the cards at “half price.”

Anyway, it’s an effectively irrelevant amount of money, but the principle of it annoys me. When I’m sent cards that weren’t as described, I message the seller and tell them. Not out of anger or ill-will, but because there has to be some semblance of accountability for sellers. If everyone just allowed sellers to get away with misgrading cards, the practice of grading would lose all purpose. And mind you, I’m not an overly strict grader – not in the least. I just don’t think cards with water damage or creases should be sent as ‘NM.’

And, again, it wouldn’t be an issue if it were just a mistake that Collector’s Cache offered to fix – it’s understandable that misgraded cards fall through the cracks. But their response to the situation really left a sour taste in my mouth, and was very surprising coming from a larger vendor. Has anyone else had similar experiences with Collector’s Cache? Or is this just a one-off? Hopefully I’m not alone in thinking their response is very inappropriate and unprofessional. It’s bizarre, in my mind, for a vendor to refuse to correct it’s mistake because the cards were purchased at “half-price” – especiallywhen that vendor still has those exact same cards in stock for the price they were purchased for.

I haven’t dealt with them personally, but I just did a search to try finding reviews by other who used them and one site showed a selection of negative 1/5 star reviews. So, it seemingly appears that they do have some issues with customer service.

Here are the reviews I found:

I have used them to buy some booster boxes without a bad experience but I guess the single card side may be different. That is extremely annoying and unprofessional for a business, I am sorry you had to deal with that.

Wait is this about 2 $0.30 cards?! As a buyer I honestly wouldn’t care. As a seller I would just refund you and be done.

As for sites like the one above, they are terrible resources. Collectors cache is a massive store that’s been around since the beginning of the hobby. You have to ignore millions of positive transactions to focus on the handful of negatives.

Also you might be talking to a minimum wage worker. Just adding some perspective as this doesn’t really need a full page call out.

Two $3 cards. Regardless, the money is irrelevant. It’s the principle of it. I’ve dealt with just about every major TCG vendor (Coolstuffinc, Troll & Toad, StarCityGames, ABUGames, Card Kingdom – you name it), and have never had a bad experience.

I didn’t intend this as a call out. Far from it: as the title of the thread meant to express, I was asking if others have had similar experiences with them – because they are such a large and established vendor was what made it surprising.

It’s not as though I took out a full-page ad in the NY Times; I just made a thread in the ‘sour grapes’ section of this forum, which didn’t feel inappropriate. If I’m wrong and this was an inappropriate thread to start, feel free to delete it.

The title is a leading question. Objectively cc and any business this size and age is more than fine. They are inherently going to make mistakes because of their size, and this one sounds like you talked to a minimum wage employee who should have just refunded you

I’m not downplaying your situation, it’s just ultimately par for the course on tcgplayer. This month alone I had 2 orders send the entirely wrong card. I’d go through tcgplayer and get your refund for item not described.

@zorloth, it semms like youre new here and with that i feel this post holds that to some truth, so hopefully i can shed a little light on this for you.

Tcgplayer isnt a great resource for findinf true to ondition cards. The concept of “near mint” varies from person to person, and even within the parameters of grading as well (after all, a psa 7+ is still near mint). With that understanding, from here would jsut be a game of trail and error of finding new resources to purchase from in the future. While Collectors Cashe is a huge business, as smpratte stated you could be dealing with anyone on the other end and this issue is a minor one at best for such a large entity so thats why your experiencing such a negative response. There is a pandemic going on as well, so a small sale such as your purchase isnt top priority for them, so always consider that while going through the process.

Again, from here id suggest finding other means to source cards, and ebay is a great resource offering scans and pictures from many vendors/sellers/businesses. I wish there were more than just that, but in reality it is the best weve got. Try that while going in with knowing that everyones idea of Mint/near mint is different, and eventually youll find cards that fit your specific specifications. Hard work in sourcing them will pay off eventually, so try to let this instance slide and let the past be the past.

It’s one of the few businesses that are still in biz that I see advertised in my old Beckett magazines from 1999 and 2000. They’ve been around a long time and are huge so…I think you just got a bad representative here.

You could of made $6 working a minimum wage job in the time it took to write up this post. As said before, you probably got a bad rep, can always just try again.

I wasn’t sure of another way to word the title; I wasn’t trying to fish for a certain sort of response – though I can see how it comes off like that.

And that’s fair; I realize that my unsavory experience doesn’t make them a ‘bad’ company or anything. But I still don’t feel that a company’s size and the fact that a minimum wage employee is likely at fault makes it not worthy of mentioning. I do disagree, also, that this is par for the course for TCGPlayer. Knowing you, I have no doubt that you’ve ordered more from TCGPlayer than I have, but I’ve been using TCGPlayer for longer than that’s been their name, and I’ve never had to escalate something to them. But perhaps I’ve been lucky.

And, regardless, I’m not going to escalate this to TCGPlayer or anything. It is what it is; I just was pretty annoyed and felt like venting.

I take your point, but as I stated, it wasn’t about the money, but about the principle of the situation. Was just trying to vent. And I agree that it’s most likely that it was just a one-off unsavory experience.

Very fair points, and I appreciate and will take your advice. I will say that the rampant misgrading of Pokemon cards is just simply not an issue for MTG cards on TCGPlayer. If I wanted a PSA 9/10 candidate MTG card, I know exactly which vendors I could order from to get it. And my standards are not quite that high – as I noted, the two cards in question had water damage and creasing, neither of which are acceptable on NM cards by any standard.

@zorloth, No worries! People are just trying to give you constructive advise as the company is clearly reputable and been around forever. I’d personally just refund you as the seller, and I’m sure if you go through the tcgplayer process that will happen!

I highly appreciate the constructive advice that you and others have given me on this thread. The company is, from what I can tell, very reputable. Still, I will certainly not be buying from them again (not that they need my business, though, of course). I will say that I’ve completed 95% of the reverse holo and holo sets of EX Ruby Sapphire through FRLG (mostly) from buying via TCGPlayer, and I’ve received many cards that would easily grade PSA 8 or higher (basing this on the ~15 PSA 7-9 cards I’ve cracked so far). There are a few vendors on there that have consistently sent me nearly pack fresh cards, so I will continue buying from those vendors – and I should, as someone mentioned on this thread (may have been you, can’t remember), just take this as a lesson in trial-and-error.

Also, one thing I’m likely also realizing is that Pokemon card grading standards are much different from MTG grading standards. Which is pretty understandable given how much more fragile many Pokemon cards are (just earlier I accidentally scraped off the ink on an EX Deoxys reverse holo by gingerly trying to remove a speck of dirt lol). Anyway, you live, you learn.

I have always gotten quality from Collector’s Cache. I refuse to look at Troll & Toad, every card I got from them has been scratched.

The reason I personally prefer Troll & Toad to other card sellers is because I generally get lucky with getting truly mint cards and even sometimes lightly played cards that I buy are actually near mint. Granted, I am not disagreeing with your opinion though as friends have told me that they don’t bother with Troll & Toad themselves due to subpar quality. I guess it is just a matter of luck of the draw, though I usually buy singles from them to complete playable decks and a few to complete sets, but I have graded some quality cards and gotten 8-10s with an occasional 7.

As previously mentioned, I haven’t really considered using Collector’s Cache in light of seeing various negative reviews online, but given the community’s opinion of their quality I will give them a shot!

I’ve boycotted a business for lesser reasons than this. Double charged me for an item and then after frequent attempts to get them to reverse it for me only to be ignored, I never shopped there again.

Told all my buddies. They went out of business a few months later. Over $6 as well. Sometimes your business practice is more important than the dollar amount you would lose. Unfortunately, most businesses don’t understand that. Principle means so much more. That $6 cost them thousands just amongst the people I told.
