Airtags as Shipping "Insurance"?

Part of the hobby is shipping expensive stuff. This is often terrifying. I have read plenty of horror stories on this forum about sending to PWCC or to and from PSA and getting… lost.

I saw this video and thought - the cost of an airtag is $25. If I sent a $50,000 package to pwcc vault, why wouldn’t I throw an airtag in there? or if I’m PWCC, why wouldn’t I throw an airtag in things going _out_ of PWCC?

Sure, this doesn’t help if something gets stolen - although it might give some leads in the event the person took it back to their house or place of work before discarding the airtag.

The piece of technology could actually become invaluable to the collectibles industry.

Wanted to know- have you ever thought about this and tried it? Would you consider buying a $25 airtag and throwing it in a 5 figure shipment just to CYA?

With better technology I wouldn’t be surprised if something similar ended up becoming the standard way to track all packages in the future.
I haven’t used one yet but I keep the idea in the back of my mind in case I ever feel I would need it.

It’s an interesting idea! I’m a wedding photographer and have one in my camera bag at all times in case it gets stolen. Should make an insurance claim easier!

This has existed for a long time and people do use them. Look online for disposable GPS trackers

An airtag is cheap though!!

Have you ever used one when shipping high $$ items? I feel like I have never heard of this actually preventing a bad outcome, but sorta jumped to the conclusion that it was way too out of reach for the common person and too expensive to “throw away”

It only helps if it’s actually lost inside the shippers facility

I can’t image it helps theft

Wonder if there could be any problem with declarations for international shipments. Would you declare the inclusion of the tracker? The battery could be an issue with couriers. And I’m not sure how this prevents theft, given a package could still be opened, the contents removed and the tracker discarded

True but you can hide the tracker and will get a final ping before it is thrown away. It can be useful knowing the time and location, especially if they take it home etc. I think they could be useful for sure. I would expect most people to take the item home first.

I know this is a very old thread but it worked, yes I’m neurotic when it comes to lost packages

Awesome it got there, i think id be worried theyd deny it once it was opened and ship it back assuming i was trying to track to their warehouse or something. Best of luck on your grades!

Thanks! I was nervous that could happen but once I saw the grading started I deleted it. $25 for a new air tag beats $450 insurance lol
