Me either although i have much less experience with them than you to be fair but still is that the only reason why everyone hates them? i never knew they were an issue, I can’t say that i use the same method as OP to un-sleeve cards from any sleeve though.
What sleeves would everyone recommend if not KMC’s? Could this not happen with any sleeve if not careful enough?
I don’t use them on every card but i do like to use them for cards in toploaders.
OP i am sorry for your loss, Look on the bright side that it was not a $1000+ card. Hopefully it won’t happen again after Kakuna’s sacrifice
If you are careful you are fine. If you are sleeving cards with square corners then I would be extra careful. Topps, especially holo ones are easy to damage putting into a snug or thicker sleeve. The loose cheap penny sleeves have always worked easiest and best for me.
Worst I’ve done is drop my PSa 8.5 1st edition Shining Tyranitar causing just a chip in the psa case. Problem is i don’t want to be without my card for a year due to recasing! O well it doesn’t matter to me personally. It’s only a issue if I ever sell
I think @acebren, is missing the point. I “the OP” take full responsibility for not properly holding the card during removal. Perfect fits have always been “perfectly” fine, no pun intended, but if you do not like them then that is your opinion too. I have never noticed damage from using them. It just shows you need to be careful. If you like to backhand your cards out of their sleeves then perfect fits are not for you, but this is meant as a long term storage, not removed normally option.
Not to mention, the point of this post was not to start a sleeve flame war…
@joer Your experience is not a singular event, so it’s relevant to share why using the sleeves could result in accidental damage to the card.
The KMC brand perfect fits are made in Japan for Japanese manufactured cards. They are a “perfect fit” for Japanese cards
Some rough dimensions:
Japanese (old back) holo: 62.7176mm wide x 0.3048mm thick
Nintendo/Pokemon holo (2010): 62.9285mm wide x 0.3302mm thick
WOTC holo: 63.0859mm wide x 0.3251mm thick
Ash, here are some sleeves I reviewed several years ago that could help. There might be some better sleeves available now. My recommendation are UP premium or penny sleeves for general use.
KMC sleeves aren’t made for Japanese cards lol. KMC has been around longer than Pokemon cards have existed. They’re made to fit MTG cards perfectly.
And they fit perfectly around Nintendo-era Pokemon cards. Again, maybe WotC cards are a different story. But I have all my Nintendo sets double sleeved and have used them with every MTG deck I’ve made since like 2008. For MTG or Nintendo-era Pokemon cards, there’s no risk of damage if you know how to sleeve/unsleeve with them. Don’t have as much experience sleeving WotC cards with them, so I can’t comment on that.
They also work perfectly fine for wotc, but if one is not very careful with handling, cards might get dented/creased along the opening as you need to bend the card a bit to access into the sleeve with your finger - @zorloth it´s probably a but different for us mtg players as we basically sleeve everything with them, therefore having more experience handling them. I have complete mtg sets as well as decks sleeved with them and they don´t (!!) damage cards when you handle them properly.
It sounds like we unsleeve differently lol. To unsleeve, I lightly tap the closed-end of the perfect fit-- I never put my finger into the perfect fit as that exposes the inside of the perfect fit to air. If even a tiny piece of dust gets into a perfect fit, your card is fucked.
100% agree. People saying they damage cards aren’t sleeving with them correctly lol. And they are essential to preventing surface wear on foils. Being a foil enthusiast, it greatly disappoints me to see clouded foils. And clouding is fully prevented when using perfect fits. Obviously we aren’t shuffling sleeved Pokemon cards so it’s a bit different, but perfect fits are still a must for raw mint cards, IMO.
You said KMC sleeves are manufactured for Japanese cards, which is incorrect. I realize that KMC sleeves are manufactured in Japan, but that has nothing to do with the cards they are intended for.
Nothing big, but I had a pile of cards in a drawer a couple years ago and when I went to close it I didn’t realise the pile was too high. I ended up “crushing” a full art skarmory from xy base set lol. It was actually only a medium crease in the top left corner, but yeah… I sold it as part of a lot a while ago.
I’ve ruined 1 or 2 worthless yugioh cards with kmc perfect fit. I still use kmc perfect fit for my binder Pokemon cards, but if a sleeve feels like it’s gonna be too tight I just chuck it and try another one. Sometimes they are just too small.
It’s a pointless argument, but if you want I can show you why KMC perfect fit inner sleeves are (or at least were as of 2018) in fact designed for Japanese cards, for the Japanese card market, in PM.
The perfect fit design hasn’t changed significantly over the decade+ of my using them. It was designed to fit MTG cards, and the fit has never changed at all (AFAICT). So if they modified their perfect fit for the Japanese card market, then it wasn’t a noticeable modification lol. Regardless, I agree that this a pointless argument. The point stands, however, that KMC perfect fits weren’t made for Japanese Pokemon cards (or any Pokemon cards or any Japanese cards, for that matter). They were made to fit MTG cards, and they just so happen to fit certain Pokemon cards (including Japanese cards) very well.
