Reminder that the black label premium is basically entirely dependent on BGS’s reputation
That 8k Moonbreon buyer sweatin’ right now.
So they were serious and they just got a lot of backlash (like when they were trying to change their label design) and they didn’t try and use the April Fools as a “just-in-case card”.
I’m not sure what to think here, but it looks really bad on the company… Like whoever is making these decisions is not doing a good job.
What a PR disaster. Clearly BGS needs new leadership. This is as bad as the Magic 30 fiasco.

Not sure if it is related to this thread, if so maybe the title should be updated…
I actually feel sorry for them. The thing is a company that’s service is attention to detail and they can’t even get the big announcement board correct is beyond…
that’s called marketing , this is how you keep up the buzz and forums/influencers busy ![]()
Definitely got people talking but for the reasons they wanted? Lol
Can you find a pic of him dropping the Pokeball? ![]()
The reason why quad 9s and 9.5, 9.5, 9.5 and 9 wasn’t included is they wanted their 10s to actually be on average comparable to psa 10. They obviously deemed their 3 9.5s 1 10 and 2 9.5s and 2 10s to be where they felt they were comparable. Now they can’t do what was essential.
What an interesting thread to read through after the fact lol.
I think ultimately it all just highlights how silly the minutia of subgrades are when you go down to a .5 level.
I do think it’s interesting to wonder how the trajectory of both BGS and CGC would have gone if they’d both just launched with the standard flat number 1-10 that PSA use, my personal feeling is they both would have done better - the psychology of the 10 is just too strong.
Holy smokes.
Way worse than if they’d just stuck to their guns. Now when people are negotiating for a BGS 9.5 slab, people will say “well you know this isn’t actually Gem Mint right?” ![]()

Their reputation is now at a Poor 2
As much effort as they’re putting into trying to refresh their labels, they should really put everything into making it easier to submit and track orders. They’re so far behind PSA (even shipping out returns is worse) that at this point it’s just concerning.
100% this. They want to compete with PSA? How about redesigning your entire website and pop report to start…
My thoughts exactly every time there’s another update like this. The labels that never actually changed, the vault and marketplace that offered nothing over the competition and never actually launched, the blockchain bullshit that they announced and never implemented long after that wave already crested…
Meanwhile I still get shit like this every time I submit cards from a new set.

Ask me about my pop 1 grails ![]()
I have an idea for a simplified grading system for Beckett:
- No more half grades
- No more sub-grades
- Only two 10 grades, Gem Mint 10 and Black Label 10
- Owners of GM 9.5s can send their cards in to be relabeled/reholdered to a Gem Mint 10 for a nominal fee.
With this system, Beckett can issue Gem Mint 10s at the same rate as PSA, while still having the Black Label 10 as their halo product. And Pristine 10s, while deprecated, will be unaffected and sit between GM 10 and Black Label.
Edited, I think it would be a PR win because 9.5 GM owners would be thrilled to have their 9.5s turned into 10s.
The multiple 10 grades just feels like condition collecting lost the plot. All this hyper focus on pixel differences isn’t about condition, it’s a flex mechanism. The added aesthetic value from a psa 10 to black label is negligible and undefinable in most cases.
It’ll be interesting to see what they do do. Should have simply copied psa and added 1 level for outstanding examples only in the first place.
