This was already posted earlier in this thread. That one happens to be an extraordinarily obvious reseal. It’s stunning to me that anyone was duped by it. If these are the sort of boxes that resealers are distributing, then all it takes is a tiny bit of effort on the part of the consumer to avoid getting scammed. The Gym Heroes box looked better, but it was likely also imperfect and so could’ve been detected under very close examination.
Please don’t blame buyers for purchasing resealed boxes that were likely sold by seemingly legitimate sellers at fair market value. And may even have been sold by genuine sellers who didn’t realize they were passing on a fake box.
It’s not like these were from Craigslist $99 boxes. Up until now the vast majority of reseals have been clear wrap base. If you are new to Pokémon and told the WOTC logo on the wrap makes it hard to fake, you would not bother to overly obsess over the wrapping nor know what to look for. Needing to be an expert on sealing methods to comfortably purchase a box that can fool experts anyway is not the answer here.
This entire situation sucks because now it’s gotten guys like me (who admittedly are not as knowledgable in the hobby) who have a WOTC box absolutely terrified that it’s a reseal. Especially with those recent reseals floating around.
Granted CG is a gigantic tool and a real toxic/shady guy but it’s just a shame that people do this kind of nonsense, even to guys like him
The blame shouldn’t be placed solely on the buyer, of course. The person who is most blameworthy is by far the person who originally resealed box. But is the buyer in part responsible? If it was a scam that could’ve been averted by a small amount of research, then yes. The buyer is responsible for educating him/herself on the risks associated with booster boxes. People should not be spending potentially life-changing amounts of money on an item that they haven’t thoroughly researched and vetted. Does that mean that they ‘deserved’ to be scammed? Of course not. It’s still a very unfortunate thing, just one that could’ve been prevented had the buyer done their part.
Also, to be clear: I’m referring to obvious reseals like the Fossil box. No person with any amount of relevant experience or knowledge would fall for it.
There is no guarantee with a 1st Ed Base box. Again, Rusty, who has been around longer than everyone in this thread, didn’t know his was fake. To the point of his box being publicly presented at a convention, with other seasoned collectors, and no one noticed it was a reseal.
Makes me wonder what’s going to happen to all the sealed WOTC product out there. I’m guessing a ton is going to be opened in the coming months due to this gross and disgusting issue. Resulting in lots of collectors hearts broken, I fear.
Extremely well-done reseals that would fool any expert are another thing altogether. But many, if not most, reseals can be detected just by having any amount of relevant knowledge. I’m far from an expert, and I was able to point out why the Fossil box in question was an obvious reseal. The shrinkwrap was in perfect condition while the box had dents, creasing, and other damage. This is, of course, not physically possible. So many scams could be averted if buyers were aware of super basic ways of assessing authenticity.
Any one of us could be scammed by an extremely well-done reseal. But most reseals aren’t extremely well-done (for instance, the Fossil box posted earlier). If buyers educate themselves at all prior to buying, most of these resealed box purchases could be averted.
I was only commenting to extinguish the misguided hate in this thread. @zorloth, Your comment just happened to be the most recent out of the many posted. Literally the top experts in this hobby cannot 100% physically guarantee a 1st Ed Base box. If/when these big youtubers get actual experts involved, that will be discussed so the general public has a better understanding.
Absolutely not. This is all that a shitty reseal would consist of. But there is a lot more that goes into producing convincing reseals. I’m referring to reseals that experts can’t detect – the typical reseal is not this way. I’m not an expert and even I was able to point out why the Fossil box was obviously resealed. The buyer should’ve realized it. It’s the fault of the resealer, of course, but it was a situation that could’ve been avoided in the first place if the buyer did their due dilligence. And many similar situations could also be avoided through similar consumer education.
In a sense I’m ‘victim-blaming,’ but not in the sense that you mean it. Do I think that the victim of the resealed Fossil box is blameworthy? To the extent that they could’ve easily averted the entire situation, yes. Does that change the fact that it’s terrible that they fell victim? Of course not. The person most at blame for the situation is the perpetrator. But does that mean that we shouldn’t encourage consumer education? Because that’s all I’m pointing out: that if the buyer of the Fossil box had any amount of relevant knowledge, they would’ve been able to avoid being victimized in the first place.
Is it confirmed the box was recently resealed? Not sure why a recently resealed box would have wotc non holos instead of modern inside, and why all of the pack wrappers (some were unl) we’re still in there
Unless the seller really tried to make the weight on-point with other boxes, but I’m just speculating
If I were resealing a 1st Edition Base box today, I would only include WotC non-holos. And for the exact reason you state: it would lead people to believe that the box was resealed many years ago. It would make it much tougher to establish chain of custody. If I included Hidden Fates bulk, on the other hand, it would establish that the resealing was done within the past 14 months. You wouldn’t be able to simply claim “I forgot who sold me the box and I’m unable to provide evidence that the transaction took place – I bought it 20 years ago and all of that has been lost to time.”
it shouldn’t be hard to track down those resealers, especially the gym heros & fossil box with 2020 pokemon cards in them, I hope the victims filed charges. Would be funny to read an article of some dude getting sentenced to prison for resealing pokemon boxes.
