Just a quick question for the community, is the zorua promos, namely these:
The back is supposed to be glossy? I’ve acquired a raw copy recently and realized that the texture on the back is definitely different from a typical Japanese Pokemon card, where the back is more matte.
Ah sorry! I saw this thread just before going to bed last night and I was planning on coming back to it.
Unfortunately my answer is that I don’t know. Looking at the back of mine through its PSA slab makes it appear not to be glossy, and I honestly don’t remember thinking it was any different to any other card before I had it graded - but then again I didn’t spend all that long looking at the back of it.
I tried holding it up to light at different angles and doing the same with a few other slabbed Japanese cards I have and couldn’t notice any difference. I also compared it to my E3 promo Pichu which is supposed to be glossy, but honestly I couldn’t notice any difference between the back of that and the Zorua either (that one might only be glossy on the front - I’ve not had a raw copy of that).
If you’re worried about its legitimacy, I’d say check the gold stamp on the front compared to other 2010 winner cards as I imagine that’d be quite difficult to fake. It would be interesting to compare your card with another raw design contest card - if yours is glossy and others aren’t, it could mean that there were different print runs (a glossy card could have been used for demonstration purposes).
Hey no problem PichuFan! I just wanted to drag you out for some help because I knew you had the card, and I wanted to confirm my cards authenticity since I recently purchased it (them technically, since I got the entire set). Thanks for paying my thread a visit!
Honestly, that’s precisely the same issue I have: I have a spare zorua PSA graded and at certain light conditions it looks a bit glossy, but the case makes it really hard to tell. I only noticed that the back was glossy when I was using a random new Japanese Pokemon card as a comparison to card stock. That’s when I realized that every single copy from the entire set is glossy in the back.
I can definitely take pictures for future legitimacy in case other members wants to use it as a cross reference. In regards to the stamp, I compared my spare PSA 9 to the raw copy and they do look identical. I do think they are most likely legitimate as there are much easier cards to fake to get more money from. Furthermore, you won’t have to go through the hassle of faking a stamp.
@lapraslaughing: Thank you so much, that would be greatly appreciated!
So upon double checking Here is what one of mine looks like
Compared to Coro Coro promo gloss It’s not close but mine is very similar to the ones I compared to (new back Japanese 2005)
It does have some bit of gloss to it compared to English but I would say it’s hard to tell the difference between the backs of either mine or another card I pulled.
As for the legitimacy of yours I would probably say it’s fine, even Japanese cards aren’t ever perfectly the same.
I want to first thank both of you for helping me out! I thought I would be getting notifications whenever a new post hits my thread, but I guess I did not. Glad I came back to check!
@pancakestak:
I will soon take more pics to do a comparison! Thanks for trying to compare it with a PSA counterpart!
@lapraslaughing: Thanks for the pic and the comparisons. I think yours look awfully similar to mine; you can see the top gloss in my first picture, compared to the super matte one that I have in the second picture. I think your description is bang-on: it has slightly more gloss compared to other new back cards (I compared it via a yokohama pikachu back and a munch scream psyduck back), but compared to a JR glossy mew the gloss is not even close that a true “glossy” card.
Anyways, I’ll take more pics very soon so that anyone else who will purchase these in the future raw can use them as a reference point. I would not worry too much about them in the past, but as prices of these just went up recently, it would be nice to have a small guide while some of these are still ungraded.
First of all, man it was difficult to try to take pictures to show the different textures, as feeling it with your fingers is definitely different from seeing it visually. However, in the end, I do notice a slight different in the gloss of the zorua illustrator cards, albeit minor:
So in the order of comparison: The PSA case is a PSA 9 Zorua Illustrator card, the middle card sandwiched between the two is the exact same Zorua illustrator card but raw, and the last card on top is a random Japanese raichu gym promo.
As you can see, the back of the PSA Zorua card does have a bit of texture to gloss to it, if you shine it with a flashlight:
If the flashlight is shined between the PSA Zorua and the Raw Zorua, you can see that the texture is the same on the two cards:
And finally, immediately when you shine the card between the raw Zorua and a typical Japanese New Back Pokemon Card, you can see a slight difference in texture:
So finally, in conclusion: There is a slight difference in gloss and texture between the Zorua illustrators and a typical Japanese New Back Pokemon card! Thanks for the help @pichufan,@lapraslaughing, and @pancakestak!
