Is a multi-level sealed product more valuable? Is a sealed brown WOTC shipping box more valuable than the sealed booster boxes inside, and are they more valuable than the sealed booster packs inside that? How is the value of a product affected by peeling away the layers of seals?
To me, the biggest factor is risk of tampering. Individual packs can be weighed, opened and resealed, etc. Therefore, sealed boxes should be more expensive than the market price for individual packs times 36. This is also why blisters go for much more than individual packs. Each layer, as you described, makes it more difficult to tamper with. Sealed cases should therefore be worth more than the booster boxes individually but when you’re trying to sell an entire case of boxes you’re limiting your buyer pool. Most collectors just want one box of a specific set or can’t afford a sealed case if they ever do pop up for sale. At the end of the day the market decides but in theory it has to do with scarcity of the sealed product and risk.
Scott did a video not too long ago talking about “what’s in the box” and how the possibility of what cards are inside affect value of the sealed product along with scarcity and what have you. He did a good job of explaining it and that would probably answer some of your questions. To me, the value per booster pack from highest to lowest should go: sealed case, sealed box, blister pack, individual pack, weighed pack (although when purchasing packs, unless it is a reputable buyer, you should always assume packs are weighed). If we look at theme decks, aside from shadowless, the cards inside are never worth the price of the box sealed because we know exactly “what’s in the box” so it loses the value of chance and its value becomes solely based on things like scarcity and nostalgia.
Remember that you can sometimes sell guaranteed unweighted packs for more than a sealed box, mainly due to a larger buyer pool. Same logic should apply to a case. People who would be interested in a case are also most likely going to be looking to turn a profit and won’t pay the full value for each booster box in it.
Theme decks are what actually prompted this thread. I was looking at sealed display boxes, did the math, and each theme deck came out to nearly double the average cost of buying individually. Could a sealed display box command such a premium?

Very true and I think that’s a good example of the things that can fuel market prices. In theory, if a booster pack is regularly selling for $100 a booster box should sell for more than $3,600 but the buyer pool and demand for individual packs sometimes says otherwise.

Exactly. Lot more buyers that can pay $100 a pack, than buyers who can drop $3600 on a booster box.
Besides packs, Boxes and cases can be resealed too. I don’t have a single sealed case cause none came from wizards so I couldn’t be sure what was inside. I even cut and lifted a flap on a VERY expensive case cause I had to have verification of what was inside.
Isn’t it sad we even have to worry about that sort of thing?
Do you collect sealed theme deck boxes (the ones with 8)? As I’ve looked into sealed product, I’m trying to figure out exactly what I want to collect. And by hearing other peoples opinions it helps me develop an opinion of my own.
