WOTC-era playmat value

This eBay listing is nearly a year old, but I’m wondering if this is a fair price for the original-era playmats. If not, is the one that sold overpriced or underpriced?

I by no means am a playmat expert, but based on ebay sales this playmat seems to be sold at roughly market price. Even if it’s “underpriced”, I don’t think it will go much higher, or skyrocket in prices for these reasons:

  1. Brand new, they don’t look like much in their packaging, making it pretty unappealing for it to be displayed.
  2. When it’s opened, as you can see in the link, it is still not the greatest art piece and it is extremely crinkled due to the way it is packed: i.ebayimg.com/images/g/gNcAAOSwoFVaf79N/s-l1600.jpg
  3. Playmats in general are not really sold at expensive prices, at least not as much as the card counterpart.

Would I buy the playmat at the price? For nostalgic reasons, probably yes. Would I pay 50$+ for it? Probably not, I’d rather buy some more pokemon cards!

Decent play mat today will run you $20-25. For a sealed WOTC one $50 seems fair. Like mentioned above it’s not that attractive. That’s what’s holding the value back.

(rofl)Thanks for the feedback, guys. I agree — it’s a rather unattractive playmat. The original-era Japanese playmats, with their thick felt and bold graphic design, put WOTC’s lame product to shame.

Based on the ones I’ve seen, I do suspect the one pictured in that auction had been opened at one point and then re-sealed.
