Worlds 1st Celebrity Pokémon Base Box Break Charity Drive

yet another person that somehow thinks because he has graded cards it justifies opening the box that way lol. that’s all it takes for you to earn someone’s trust huh… a little money ? lame

questioning the obviously abnormal method of opening the box is somehow not giving respect to gary ? lolllll

Does anyone have the final dollar amount donated during the event? I would really love to know the total including the Haase’s contribution.

I don’t think it’s the lack of respect for Gary that’s the issue. The issue that Gary is being treated preferentially compared to if it was anyone else that had done this. Yes I am aware how much Gary has done for the hobby and I have watched all his podcast interviews he graciously does for the community. I’m 100% sure if it was Logan Paul that was the one opening like this, efour would be attacking left and right. Logan’s stream was also for charity albeit his profiting as well.

The counter argument is that these cards are not 1st editions but I don’t the monetary values should matter. Gary is one of the most recognizable faces of the hobby and what he does has a lot of impact on people’s perceptions. My girlfriend who doesn’t own a single Pokemon card was watching with me, was wondering/shocked about the way the box was opened as well.

I can give a pass to the booster pack opening with a razor due to the fore-mentioned health motor movement explanation. But the box opening was very strange and questions should not be immediately/easily downplayed.

finally someone else with some SENSE. thank you!

just being a pokemon importer from 1999 and a charizard collector that sent in all the offcenter/print lined ones back to WOTC back for mint copies in 2001 does not give someone a free pass forever in my book.

yes it was for charity. no, no one is downplaying the charity or what gary has done for the hobby over years. yes. we respect him. yes he has more charizards than us. yes he has handled more boxes than us.

we are talking about the absolutely insane way the box was opened

i havent even thought about it until you said, but wow can you imagine if this forum saw guru or logan open the box like that?!

You can’t be serious… Everyone is subject to criticism, including Gary. That being said, he was probably on a time crunch to get the packs out since it was a stream. I assume he’s more gentle about it when he does this on his own. It may have also been a bit stressful for a number of reasons. I think it probably should’ve been opened normally for the stream, but as long as the cards weren’t damaged then it shouldn’t really matter.

Yeah I respect the man but the way he handled those cards and packs made me cringe at times.

guys, I don’t understand what you’re not getting. Gary says he opens 100% of his boxes like this. Gary almost undoubtedly has more experience opening boxes → grading those cards, so he’s been through this feedback loop mannnyyyy many times and says the method doesn’t impact the grades… which you can assume he would surely have noticed by now.

Either you believe him, or you don’t, but you probably are not more knowledgeable on the subject so just do things your way if you think he is misleading you.

Is the 1st ed. Booster pack included in that? I think I heard $20k was the purchase price for that donation.

$192,000?

As I look for a freaking link to watch the box break I come across this one.Believe me when I say this, I BECAME NAUSEOUS. I no longer want to even remotely see the video anymore.

Have a nice day guys…

You’re right it’s the proceeds from the sale of the graded cards from the pack so not necessarily $20K.

That physically hurts. Just open the box

edit: it’s not that serious I’m exaggerating here don’t @ me

Came into this thread expecting to hear about the pulls, but it’s just a bunch of nerds mad about a man opening a box

Also the PSA 9 1st. Ed. Chansey that was donated by the Coffee Breakers on the stream.

So $135k in cash and another 65k (projected) total after PWCC sales going to charity. So a total of almost $200k unless I’m missing something.

tfw Gary raised money for the very same people that are angry at him for how he opened the box

Ok guys, I get everyone has an opinion on how you perceive the cards were handled. Put frankly, Gary is not in some protected class of collector where he can never do anything wrong. Simultaneously, your qualms about how he opened the box are irrelevant unless you were the one receiving the cards, and those people can deal with Gary privately if they really feel it is necessary.

But this should not be the focus of the thread. Please don’t let this minor thing dominate the conversation regarding something that is absolutely a net positive thing and should be celebrated.
