Why are there so many non-paying buyers?

For auctions, yes; it makes logical sense. A person could place a max bid of $1,000 with the expectation that the card won’t go for any more than $700, but when they wake up the next morning and see it went for $995, they panic and ghost.

But @pfm was referring to BIN listings, which is a much less understandable scenario for said customers. I make sure to require immediate payment on eBay, but for items with a Best Offer option, the customer still has to physically make payment after their offer is accepted. How so many people can act so surprised and ghost after their exact offer was accepted is mind boggling to me. It’s not like auctions where you can max bid $1,000 and win the item for $500. In the case of BIN with BO listings, you are literally offering the exact amount you are going to pay if the seller accepts.

I think it just boils down to so many people not valuing their own reputation. If you break your word, no one is going to want anything to do with you. These people don’t seem to care about that.

I’ll add that while I haven’t noticed a big change over time in the total number of non-paying buyers, I’ve definitely noticed a huge uptick in people trying to negotiate extra conditions or ask questions (discounts, bundles, additional photos/condition details, transact off ebay, different shipping address, tax evasion, etc) after making the purchase and then refuse to pay when they don’t get what they want, thus wasting even more time than just not paying.

edit: this exchange is an absolute gem of what I’m talking about
