You’re not douchey for leaving a neutral for him not accepting his screw up. I think it would be fair. However id check what he means by work something out…
Never threaten or even mention the words “negative” or “neutral feedback” in a message. It can be deemed “feedback extortion” and get you in trouble and/or the feedback removed. I mentioned it at one point to a shit seller I was dealing with who never even shipped an item and my negative was later wiped away since I said that I would be leaving a negative if I didn’t get a refund (when I was totally due a refund since I never got the item). eBay wiped it away later I am sure that was the reason why as I have had legitimate cases of buyers extorting me and had those easily removed when the eBay rep spotted the words “negative feedback” in a message. It made no sense whatever but eBay isn’t always known for making sense all the time.
Neutral feedback doesn’t have a big impact on new sellers even. It doesn’t count for them really nor against them in the eyes of eBay. Won’t hurt someone’s 100% feedback score, but it can clearly stick out to any prospective buyers looking at detailed feedback info.
So I sent him a message saying I was disappointed and my hope would be for him to honor the sale. I told him I’d leave it to him as to whether or not to issue the refund, and that I appreciated his honesty. He later refunded, and I proceeded to leave a neutral, his first in 400 transactions. I thought twice about it, but in the end, I just can’t see this as an acceptable eBay behavior and I felt no feedback or positive feedback would be in some way condoning this practice.
One thing I’ve noticed is that the card is now showing up as an unpaid item. Is there anything I need to do? I don’t want to end up receiving a no pay mark (if eBay still does this).
He should have “cancelled transaction”, but it sounds like he may have just refunded through paypal. Can you send a cancel request? I think he would have to do that to recover his final value fees (FVF) anyways.
You did the right thing in leaving a neutral IMO. He will remember it and hopefully it will be enough to prevent him from doing it again in the future. It will probably steer a small amount of business away from him too if you were descript in the feedback about his practices which if it does, is rightfully so.
