It rarely happenens but the recent ones that come to mind are getting caught up in the hype and overpaying for for an evolutions Charizard and paying £2k for PSA 9 1st Edition Blaine’s Charizard then seeing some sell for £300-400 less recently
About two years ago, GradedPower listed a PSA 10 1st Edition Light Togetic for $65 or best offer. Not knowing that it was probably the hardest card to grade in Neo Destiny and thinking that it was priced appropriately, I offered $57 instead of just hitting “Buy It Now.” A few minutes later, it sold.
Not long afterward, I found out that that card is worth a heck of a lot more than $65.
Occasionally mixing up when to be patient and when to act immediately. Thankfully this has only hurt me as a buyer and not a seller since I only make collection/hold purchases.
I’m curious, why buy multiple if you’re trying to collect a certain set or collection? Wouldn’t the money spent on multiples be better spent on cards that you don’t have yet for your collection? Wondering your thoughts since I’m new(ish) to collecting cards and was also contemplating buying multiples when putting together some of my sets.
Not buying 1st edition booster boxes when I regained interest initially back in 2009. Instead opted for cheap singles.
I remember scrolling through eBay back then and seeing 1st edition jungle and fossil boxes for around $300 each. Would have been a great way to build my collection, or also a good long term hold.
Hindsight is 20/20 isn’t it! If I had known what trophy kangaskhan would do in the future I would have brought a PSA 10 back in 2013/2014 I think it was. There were two on the market at once around £1000 each I seem to remember. At the time I considered it and passed as it seemed like too much money for a card back then.
Simply not buying the card that i wanted when i found it, thinking it was too expensive and it will go down in price and i will find another one at a cheaper price! Example, I hesitated buying a Trophy Khan for £1400, because I found the price too expensive. Then it kept going up and up! I finally gave in and ended up spending £10,000 for a PSA 9 copy. Just look at the price of a PSA 9 Trophy Khan now
Because there will be a time in future where I will need to sell cards to fund projects and repay loans. Your complete set will be incomplete if you don’t have doubles, especially with how the prices have skyrocketed.
Man, pod, this hits me right in the gut. In '13 I was wanting shadowless. Unlimited base was like $400 or so. Guaranteed shadowless were fairly available, and at only about $600. I was thinking that was insane, so I opted for unl, and opened it for the kicks.
So my biggest mistake as a buyer was not coughing up $200 more at the time, which is nothing in today’s eyes for base anything, to open a shadowless box. My PSA 9 Zard and all the others in my binder would be mint shadowless! So I had to go buy all the singles, which, luckily, I did at the same time then, thankfully. Well, other than Zard. I balked at a $50 NM copy. So that is my second biggest mistake. Waiting and waiting (years) and then spending $500 only just last year. Idiot.
My biggest mistakes in the beginning were not setting a specific budget and wants list. I bought too many random things in the beginning that I thought were cool and then the next I knew I was at my budget. Wish I had focused more on exactly what I wanted at the time but I am still happy with my purchases overall.
I’m the same. While I’m waiting for a good deal on my first priority, I always seem to get distracted and spend on random cheaper stuff. Some of that random stuff has gone on to be a big positive to my collection, but a lot has just kind of been a waste.
