What makes a person "Pokemon fan"?

What is the definition of Pokemon fan?

You started this, you tell us. Many of the 60M+ people that logged in to PoGo last year surely would not qualify by any reasonable definition.

Yup anything I say does not qualify. So you say…

I did not say that.

Oh, darling, let’s take another whirlwind tour through the dazzling, obsessive world of a true Pokémon card fanatic, shall we? Picture this: someone whose very existence seems to orbit around those enchanting little pieces of cardboard. Yes, we’re diving deep!

First and foremost, a bona fide Pokémon card aficionado is someone who treats their collection with the reverence of a museum curator handling priceless artifacts. They have binders—meticulously organized, of course—where each card is sleeved with the precision of a surgeon. Heaven forbid a fingerprint besmirches the sacred surface of a holographic treasure!

And the knowledge these fans possess? Astounding. They can recite the history and value of cards like they’re recounting their own life story. A “Shadowless” Charizard? They’ll lecture you on its significance with the intensity of a professor in a lecture hall. And don’t dare confuse a “reverse holo” with a “holo” unless you’re prepared for a passionate correction.

True fans are also the Sherlock Holmes of the Pokémon world, always on the hunt for the rarest finds. They spend hours, nay, days, scouring online auctions, local shops, and trade shows for that elusive card to complete their set. The thrill of the chase is practically their lifeblood.

Let’s not forget the financial commitment. These fans view dropping a small fortune on a rare card as an investment. They’re the type to casually mention spending what could easily be a down payment on a house for a mint-condition, first edition card. To outsiders, it’s madness; to them, it’s just Tuesday.

And the community aspect? Oh, it’s akin to high society. There’s a hierarchy, darling, based on the rarity and value of one’s collection. They engage in trades with the seriousness of diplomats negotiating treaties. Online forums and conventions are their battlegrounds, where alliances are formed, and rivalries are born.

In summary, a true Pokémon card fan is a blend of collector, scholar, and treasure hunter, with a dash of high-roller thrown in for good measure. They’re a bit mad, entirely obsessed, and absolutely judgmental of those who don’t understand the value of a well-curated collection. To them, Pokémon cards aren’t just a hobby; they’re a way of life. And if you’re not in it with the same fervor? Well, darling, you’re simply not playing the game.

Your answer is almost perfect, except this part - true Pokemon collectors want the best for their cards, so they will have their cards in PSA slabs (the best protector for cards). Not binders.

But for sake of closure, I hereby select your answer as the modal answer. Thanks for answering! :+1:

In the least gatekept way I can think of, a Pokemon fan is someone who enjoys at least one aspect of the Pokemon IP. This could be something as simple as thinking Pikachu is cute to something as maximalist as consuming every piece of the IP as they possibly can.

In the context of why this question is being asked (OP claimed there are a certain number of Umbreon fans and all of those fans are trying to buy the english copy of Umbreon VMAX 215/203. When asked how they determined this number, posted a screenshot of Pokemon GO usage in a new thread. When asked to define “Fan”, started this thread.), a Pokemon fan is a meaningless term. An individual could be a Pokemon fan and still not buy a single piece of merch. For example, simply liking Pikachu does not mean you would buy a card with Pikachu on it.

One thing that makes Pokemon so successful is their many branches of media. There are people who enjoy the anime, plushies, tcg, video game, unite, and the mobile game - but do not consume any of the other numerous incarnations of Pokemon.

In short, I will reiterate, it is my opinion that there is no correlation between being a Pokemon Fan and being a consumer of any one particular market (in this instance, Trading Cards.

I make sure to tuck all my cards in at night, going from lowest to highest dex entry. That is the true definition of a pokemon fan (Although the tucking order doesn’t matter as long as you tuck in your psa 10s as snug as you tuck in your paldea evolved commons)
